Britain’s youth express growing disillusionment with national identity as surveys reveal declining patriotism and trust in democracy

Western civilization is facing one of its toughest moments—not because of a failure of values, but because of a crisis of confidence.

At a time when we should be standing strong against global challenges, doubts have crept into the very foundation of our societies.

This uncertainty is visible across the political spectrum, from the Left’s discomfort with Western history to the Right’s disillusionment with the state of our institutions.

Doubting Our Own Legacy

The West has been a beacon of democracy, free markets, and innovation.

These principles built our economies, shaped our legal systems, and provided freedoms many across the world aspire to.

Yet, despite this legacy, we find ourselves questioning our ability to uphold these ideals.

Can we still build and create as past generations did?

Can we maintain the liberal values of free speech, trade, and governance?

The issue is not with these principles themselves—the issue is weakness in defending them.

Troubling Trends Among the Youth

Recent surveys reveal alarming statistics: nearly half of young Britons believe their country is racist, and 60% do not take pride in their nationality.

Even more concerning, a significant portion of the younger generation would prefer an authoritarian leader over a democratic system.

This sentiment is not surprising. Many young people see a Parliament bogged down by trivial debates and inaction.

They witness leaders hesitant to challenge those who undermine foundational values.

Frustration with stagnation and performative politics leads some to believe that a ‘strong’ leader who bypasses democracy might be the answer.

But history tells us otherwise.

The Dangers of Strongman Politics

Growing up under a military dictatorship, I saw firsthand what happens when liberal values are discarded.

Leaders who promise strength often bring only suppression—silencing journalists, eroding free speech, and ruling with unchecked authority.

Economic opportunity shrinks, dissent is punished, and societies suffer.

Many former British colonies that rejected democratic principles found themselves trapped in cycles of corruption and authoritarianism.

Once freedoms are lost, they are hard to regain.

The Fight for Western Values

The values that define Western civilization—free markets, free speech, rule of law, and equality—are under siege not just by external threats, but by internal complacency.

Instead of defending what previous generations built, we are too busy deconstructing and critiquing.

The progressive Left focuses on ideological battles over pronouns and diversity mandates, not as matters of fairness, but as mechanisms of control.

Every moment spent debating self-evident truths distracts us from addressing real threats to our society.

The Corruption of Law and Order

One of the clearest signs of this crisis is the manipulation of human rights laws.

The European Convention on Human Rights was originally designed to protect individuals from state persecution.

Now, it is often misused to undermine national security and border policies.

Absurd cases—like criminals avoiding deportation over trivial personal issues—show how legal interpretations have been stretched beyond reason.

This lack of resolve extends beyond the courts.

Authorities have hesitated to tackle serious issues, such as organized abuse of young girls, for fear of upsetting ‘community relations.’

In matters of national defense, underfunding and passivity embolden adversaries like Russia, Iran, and North Korea.

Weakness, not liberalism, is the real enemy here.

Leading with Strength, Not Fear

Conservatives must reclaim their role as defenders of Western civilization.

This requires courage, not just compliance with legal challenges and social pressure.

One remarkable example of such bravery is Katharine Birbalsingh, headmistress of the Michaela School.

When faced with students disrupting school order under the guise of religious expression, she took a firm stand.

She upheld school rules despite fierce backlash and legal threats, ultimately winning in court.

Contrast this with politicians like Keir Starmer, who took the knee during Black Lives Matter protests in response to issues unrelated to Britain.

Leadership requires standing firm, not bending to populist pressure.

The Conservative Path Forward

The Conservative Party in Britain has just suffered an electoral defeat, but the battle for Western values is far from over.

To rebuild confidence, we must start with the truth:

  • A nation cannot thrive if its people and intellectual leaders do not believe in it.
  • Higher education has been infiltrated by anti-Western rhetoric, poisoning young minds.
  • Economic policies must focus on growth, not virtue signaling over Net Zero and mass immigration.
  • Immigration levels must be controlled to prioritize British citizens.
  • The welfare system must not be a permanent crutch for those unwilling to contribute.
  • The UK is not a racist country and does not need to apologize for its past.

A Call to Action

The West stands at a crossroads.

If we succumb to weakness, self-doubt, and ideological distractions, we risk losing everything that makes our civilization great.

But if we stand firm, defend our values, and embrace bold leadership, we can usher in a new era of strength and prosperity.

The future of the West is not predetermined. It will be shaped by those who are willing to fight for it.

Now is the time to rise, reclaim our confidence, and secure a future that honors the best of our past while forging a path forward with strength and conviction.
