Hollywood’s next breakout star is about to make waves in one of television’s most talked-about shows.
At just 21, Sam Nivola is set to join the cast of The White Lotus in its highly anticipated third season, filmed in Thailand.
While he may be a fresh face to many, Sam has been around the industry his entire life—thanks to his famous parents, Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola.
From London to Brooklyn: Sam’s Early Years
Born in London, Sam spent his early childhood in Notting Hill before moving to the United States with his family.
He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, attending the prestigious Saint Ann’s School, where tuition costs between $48,000 and $52,000 per year.
His academic journey continued at Columbia University, marking another milestone in his well-rounded upbringing.
A Family Steeped in Hollywood Legacy
Sam’s entry into acting came early, with his first role in the 2013 HBO series Doll & Em, where he played Ariel.
The show had a special connection for him—his mother, English actress and director Emily Mortimer, was one of the writers.
His father, Alessandro Nivola, is also a celebrated actor, known for his roles in The Brutalist (2024), American Hustle (2013), and Disobedience (2017).
Though both of Sam’s parents have impressive careers, he insists they’re not the kind of celebrities who get mobbed on the street.
In a past interview with Vogue, he humorously downplayed their fame, saying, “My parents aren’t, like, total celebrities. They don’t get recognized in the street.”
A Creative Household: Following in Family Footsteps
Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola have been together for over 24 years, having met on the set of Love’s Labour’s Lost in 2000 before marrying in 2003.
They raised two children, both of whom have followed their path into the entertainment industry.
Sam’s younger sister, May, 14, is also an actress.
The siblings even shared the screen in White Noise (2022), an apocalyptic black comedy that opened the Venice Film Festival.
Director Noah Baumbach, who helmed White Noise, recalled how impressed he was with Sam and May’s auditions.
“We were looking for kids and went through audition after audition, and all the callbacks, and these two Nivola kids kept on coming up to the surface. They were just so wonderful.”
A Nepo-Baby Power Couple: Sam and Iris Apatow
When it comes to Hollywood’s next generation, Sam is in good company.
He’s been dating fellow industry insider Iris Apatow for the past two years.
She’s the daughter of actress Leslie Mann and director Judd Apatow, making them a true “nepo-baby” power couple.
In his Vogue interview, Sam joked about his circle of celebrity offspring friends, calling them “some secret cabal of nepo kids who hang out in black robes.”
A Career on the Verge of Stardom
Despite already acting alongside big names like Bradley Cooper in Maestro and Nicole Kidman in Netflix’s The Perfect Couple, it’s his upcoming role in The White Lotus that could launch him into true stardom.
However, Sam admitted that he wasn’t confident about landing the part.
“I’ve never felt more certain that I wasn’t gonna get a part,” he confessed.
With his talent, connections, and undeniable screen presence, Sam Nivola is well on his way to becoming a household name.
His next chapter in Hollywood is just beginning.
