The NFL’s decision to overlook Lil Wayne for this year’s Super Bowl halftime show in New Orleans sparked disappointment among fans—and even led to an official apology from the league.
Instead, the honor went to Kendrick Lamar, whose performance at the Superdome on Sunday night left many viewers underwhelmed.
Backlash Over Kendrick Lamar’s Performance
Kendrick Lamar’s set included his highly publicized diss track aimed at Drake, but the overall reception was far from positive.
Fans took to social media to call it “the worst halftime show ever,” criticizing the performance for failing to live up to the hype.
Given Lil Wayne’s deep-rooted connection to New Orleans, many felt he was the natural choice for the event.
NFL’s Apology to Lil Wayne
Sports commentator Skip Bayless, a longtime friend of Lil Wayne, revealed that the NFL had privately apologized to the rapper months before the event.
Speaking on his YouTube show, Bayless shared that the league sent Wayne a letter on official NFL letterhead, acknowledging his years of support for the sport and expressing regret for the decision.
“It wasn’t from anyone in particular—just from the league itself,” Bayless explained.
“They thanked him for everything he’s done for the NFL, from supporting his favorite team, the Green Bay Packers, to promoting the league as a whole.”
Despite the apology, Wayne was deeply affected by the snub.
According to Bayless, the rapper initially struggled to process the disappointment and withdrew from social activities for days. “When the news broke, it hit him hard.
He didn’t feel like doing much of anything for a while. He’s better now, but it really took a toll on him.”
Lil Wayne’s Emotional Reaction
Lil Wayne later spoke about his feelings during an Instagram Live session, where he admitted that he had assumed the halftime slot was his.
“I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown,” he shared.
“I just automatically saw myself on that stage, in my city, performing at the Super Bowl. There was nothing bigger than that for me, and when it didn’t happen, it hurt—a whole lot.”
While he did watch the game, Wayne made it clear he had no interest in the halftime show.
“Not one second,” Bayless confirmed.
What’s Next for Lil Wayne?
Despite the disappointment, Lil Wayne remains one of the biggest supporters of the NFL and continues to make appearances on “NFL GameDay Morning.”
Many fans are hopeful that he’ll get another chance to headline a future Super Bowl halftime show—perhaps even in his beloved New Orleans.
For now, though, the missed opportunity remains a sore spot for both Wayne and his fans, who believe he was the perfect fit for the biggest stage in American sports.
