A mother’s love is unwavering, and for Sarah Hall, that extends not only to her daughter but also to the man who took her life.
Despite the heartbreaking reality, Sarah firmly believes that her partner, Simon Vickers, never intended to harm their 14-year-old daughter, Scarlett.
However, a jury saw things differently, and now Vickers is facing a life sentence for the crime that shattered their family.
A Shocking Incident in a Family Home
On a seemingly ordinary evening in July, at their home in Darlington, County Durham, tragedy struck.
Scarlett was fatally stabbed in the chest by her father, Simon Vickers, who plunged a knife 11cm into her heart.
The 50-year-old father claimed it was a tragic accident during a playful moment in the kitchen, but jurors were unconvinced.

They had been watching the European Championship football earlier in the evening, enjoying what seemed to be a normal family night.
As he was being taken into custody, Vickers appeared confused and distraught.
“We were mucking about, playing in the kitchen, and for some reason, this has gone really weird,” he reportedly said.
His disbelief continued as he mentioned their planned family holiday.
“We are going on holiday to Gran Canaria in six weeks. I don’t believe this is happening.”
The Defense and the Trial’s Findings
Vickers insisted throughout the trial that he did not intentionally pick up a knife.
He claimed he had only been playing with kitchen tongs, swiping them in Scarlett’s direction, and theorized that she may have accidentally moved onto the knife.

A pathologist determined that an accidental stabbing was “practically impossible” and that the knife had to have been held with a firm grip when it struck Scarlett.

“It is difficult to understand what motivated Simon Vickers to take the life of his daughter,” he said, adding that the forensic evidence clearly disproved Vickers’ account of events.
Detective Superintendent Craig Rudd echoed this sentiment, stating, “Had he not picked up that knife, Scarlett would still be alive today.”
While the full truth may never be known, one thing remains certain: a young life was cut tragically short, and those who loved Scarlett will be left to carry the weight of her loss forever.
