After years of speculation and hopeful rumors, it looks like Line of Duty is officially returning for a seventh season.
Actress Christina Chong, who played DI Nicky Rogerson in seasons two and six, has confirmed that she has been approached about reprising her role in the next installment of the gripping police drama.
During a recent appearance at the Hollywood Saturn Awards, Chong let the news slip when asked about the possibility of another season.
“So I have been asked about a season… is it seven? Yeah. Potentially, Nicola Rogerson will be back for season seven,” she revealed.
A Long-Awaited Return for AC-12
The last season of Line of Duty aired in 2021, ending with the shocking revelation that the bumbling DCI Ian Buckells (played by Nigel Boyle) was the mysterious criminal mastermind known as ‘H.’
The finale left many fans with mixed emotions, and ever since, there has been intense speculation about whether AC-12 would return to the screen.
Christina Chong’s confirmation adds fuel to the fire, and fans are eager to see how the show’s creators will follow up on such a dramatic conclusion.
Martin Compston Weighs In on the Future of the Show
Martin Compston, who plays DS Steve Arnott, has also hinted at the show’s return in a recent interview with The Times.
While acknowledging that nothing is set in stone, he shared his enthusiasm about potentially stepping back into his character’s iconic waistcoat.
“I just don’t know. I’m busy next year. Vicky’s ridiculously busy, so is Adrian.
If there’s a story Jed wants to tell, he’ll come to us.
As soon as there’s some news, we’ll let you know, but right now, there’s nothing there. I’d like to pull my waistcoat out again,” he said.
Compston also joked about how wearing a waistcoat outside of Line of Duty feels like stepping back into character, saying, “I like a waistcoat, but I can’t wear them now; it’s like putting on Steve’s character.”
The Cast Drops More Hints About Season Seven
Martin Compston isn’t the only cast member who has been dropping hints.
Adrian Dunbar, who plays Superintendent Ted Hastings, has also suggested that new episodes could be on the way.
During an interview with Virgin Radio UK, he shared some of his character’s famous one-liners and teased that he had another Irish saying he wanted to add to the show: “Don’t stall the digger.”
More intriguingly, Dunbar also hinted that creator Jed Mercurio is actively working on the script. “He is writing… We haven’t got a script on the desk yet.
We know that Dr. Mercurio is out there doing something, Jed is writing. But as to when it’s going to happen, we don’t know.”
The Cast Reunites to Discuss Season Seven
Last November, Line of Duty stars Martin Compston, Vicky McClure, and Adrian Dunbar reportedly met with Jed Mercurio to discuss the possibility of a seventh season.
According to The Sun, this dinner meeting was different from their usual get-togethers.
A source revealed, “Jed is close with Vicky, Martin, and Adrian, and they often meet for dinner—this time it was different.
A topic of conversation was how they could align their schedules in 2025 to ensure Line of Duty 7 happens.
The ambition is filming could start next year, with it on screens by early 2026.”
Will We See AC-12 Back in Action?
While nothing has been officially confirmed by the BBC, the recent comments from the cast and their behind-the-scenes meetings are giving fans plenty of reasons to be hopeful.
The demand for another season remains high, and if the schedules align, it looks like we could see AC-12 back on our screens sooner rather than later.
For now, fans will have to wait for an official announcement—but one thing is clear: the love for Line of Duty hasn’t faded, and the return of the anti-corruption unit could be closer than we think.
