Maro Itoje Chooses England Over a Move to France

When it came time for Maro Itoje to make a career decision, he had an exciting opportunity to join the ranks of top players like Owen Farrell in the French Top 14.

But instead of making the leap across the Channel, Itoje chose to stay at Saracens, signing a new contract that kept him in the UK.

The decision meant turning down interest from prestigious French clubs like Toulouse and Racing 92.

A Desire to Finish His England Journey

For Itoje, staying with Saracens wasn’t just about club loyalty—it was about his commitment to England.

He admitted that unfinished business with the national team played a major role in his choice.

The lock explained that he didn’t feel like his time in an England shirt was over.

Had he moved abroad, he would have been watching England play from afar, and that wasn’t something he could accept.

“I felt like if I went at that time, it would have been a bit premature,” Itoje said, reflecting on his decision.

“I wanted to continue playing for England, and I knew staying would give me that chance.”

The Consequences of Moving Overseas

Had Itoje chosen to sign with one of the French clubs, he would have been ineligible for selection to the England squad due to RFU regulations.

This has become a point of contention, as the national team has seen several key players move abroad.

Many are calling for a relaxation of these rules, especially as England has been short of experienced players.

“It’s important that all the best players are available for England,” Itoje added.

“But I respect everyone’s personal choices.

I’ve played a lot of rugby with these guys, and I wish them all the best.

It’s not guaranteed that just because a player is available, they’ll be selected—there’s fierce competition for spots.”

Jack Willis’s Success in France

One of the players who left England for the Top 14 is Jack Willis, who has become a standout forward at Toulouse alongside Antoine Dupont.

Despite his success, Willis hasn’t been part of the England squad since the World Cup, a situation that surprised Dupont.

“I’m a bit surprised, but I’m quite happy not to be playing against Jack,” Dupont said, acknowledging Willis’s impact in the ruck.

“Their rules are different from ours, but Jack is a nightmare for opposition teams.”

Itoje’s decision to stay may have been influenced by the opportunity to continue competing for England, but it also reflects his commitment to his national team goals.

Now, with the England captaincy in his hands, he’ll lead his side at Twickenham for the first time tomorrow.
