Democrats Push to Ban DeepSeek from All US Government Devices Over Data Security Concerns Tied to Chinese Government

Growing Concerns Over DeepSeek’s Potential Security Threats

Amid rising tensions over cybersecurity, there’s increasing concern in Washington about DeepSeek, the AI chatbot that has taken the US by storm.

Some lawmakers are now calling for a ban on the app from all government devices, fearing it may be gathering sensitive data and sending it to servers tied to the Chinese government.

Proposed Legislation to Ban DeepSeek

Rep. Josh Gottheimer is spearheading the effort, introducing a bill that seeks to remove DeepSeek from all federal technology systems, with exceptions for law enforcement or national security purposes.

The bill also targets any future products developed by High-Flyer, the Chinese hedge fund behind DeepSeek, preventing them from being used on government-owned devices.

“I believe we should immediately ban DeepSeek from all government devices.

No one should be able to download it onto their device,” Gottheimer, who serves on the House Intelligence Committee, told ABC News.

Allegations of Data Collection

This move follows alarming findings by cybersecurity researchers, who uncovered that DeepSeek, the app that recently became the most downloaded in the US, contains code that could send user login data to a Chinese state-owned telecommunications company, which is banned from operating in the United States.

Next Steps in the Legislation

Gottheimer’s proposed bill also mandates that the Office of Management and Budget create a framework for removing DeepSeek from all federal devices within the next 60 days.

As this story develops, there are sure to be more updates on the political and cybersecurity implications of this push to block the app.
