Pope Francis Appoints Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu to Oversee the Dissolution of the Sodality of Christian Life in Vatican

In a significant move, the Vatican has decided to dissolve the Sodality of Christian Life (SCV), an organization within the Catholic Church, due to ongoing issues surrounding its founder and members.

Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu Farnós, a prominent official of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF), has been appointed by Pope Francis to manage the dissolution process.

This decision was formally announced on February 1, 2025, marking the beginning of a pivotal chapter for the SCV.

The Role of Monsignor Bertomeu in the Process

Monsignor Bertomeu, a Spanish priest, was previously involved in a special mission to Peru in July 2023.

Together with Archbishop Charles Scicluna, the deputy secretary of the DDF, Bertomeu investigated grave allegations of sexual abuse and the abuse of power among SCV members.

His investigation led to the expulsion of SCV founder Luis Fernando Figari, who was sanctioned by the Vatican in 2017 for sexual abuse.

Following the findings, in August 2024, Pope Francis ordered Figari’s permanent expulsion.

Additionally, 14 other members were expelled by the Vatican in September and October 2024.

Reasons Behind the Vatican’s Decision to Dissolve SCV

The dissolution of SCV came after years of controversy and scrutiny.

At the conclusion of SCV’s Sixth General Assembly in Brazil, held in late January 2025, it was revealed that Pope Francis had made the decision to dismantle the society of apostolic life.

While the full details of the Vatican’s decree have not been disclosed, reports indicate that the immorality of founder Luis Fernando Figari played a key role in the decision.

According to sources like Infovaticana, the Vatican’s document highlights the absence of a true foundational charism, ultimately questioning the ecclesial legitimacy of the institution’s continued existence.

SCV’s Response to the Pope’s Decision

In response to the pope’s decision, the SCV has expressed its commitment to fully cooperate with the ongoing process.

In its statement issued on February 1, 2025, the organization affirmed its adherence to the Holy Father’s choices and promised to support the dissolution efforts in every way possible.

The SCV also made it clear that it disassociates itself from any public demonstrations or publications that oppose the Holy Father or his appointed delegates.

This marks a difficult but necessary transition for the SCV, as it works to address the serious issues that led to its eventual dissolution.
