President Cyril Ramaphosa Set to Deliver State of the Nation Address in Cape Town on 6 February 2025 Discussing Government Goals and National Challenges

President Ramaphosa’s Upcoming State of the Nation Address

President Cyril Ramaphosa is all set to deliver the much-anticipated State of the Nation Address (SoNA) on Thursday, 6 February 2025, at 7:00 PM in Cape Town.

This address will be held before a joint sitting of both houses of Parliament, marking an important moment in the country’s political calendar.

What to Expect from the Address

During his speech, President Ramaphosa will lay out the government’s main policy goals and priorities for the year ahead.

He will also address some of the significant challenges the country faces and propose solutions to help unlock South Africa’s potential for growth and development.

The President will also take the opportunity to highlight key achievements since the last SoNA in 2024, especially in terms of progress made on the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan (ERRP).

A Three-Part Ceremony

The SoNA is a grand affair that unfolds in three parts.

First, the public is involved in the ceremony when the Civil Guard of Honour formally welcomes the President and his guests, as they walk down the red carpet.

This is followed by a state ceremony, featuring a 21-gun salute and a flyover by the South African Air Force.

The final segment of the event is the President’s official address.

A Rare Gathering of the Three Arms of State

The State of the Nation Address is one of the rare occasions when all three arms of government come together in one location.

In attendance will be the President and his Cabinet ministers, representing the Executive; the Chief Justice and Judge Presidents, representing the Judiciary; and the Members of Parliament, representing the Legislature.

Road Closures and Traffic Impact

For those planning to attend or travel through Cape Town on the day, be aware that the City Hall, located in the Cape Town CBD, will host the event.

As a result, several roads around the area will be closed, with restrictions lasting until 19 February 2025, according to a statement from the City of Cape Town.

The closures will impact traffic flow in and around the city center, and parking will be limited.

Some of the affected roads include Darling Street, Corporation Street, Longmarket Street, Parade Street, and Buitenkant Street.

These closures will occur at different times and dates, so it’s important to check the full list of closures before heading out.

Residents and motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel during this period.

The City also suggests limiting non-essential travel in the CBD.

The Role of the South African National Defence Force

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will be on hand to line the route taken by President Ramaphosa as he makes his way to Parliament, adding to the formal atmosphere of the event.

The Fashion of SoNA: What Will Attendees Wear?

The State of the Nation Address is always an event where attendees dress to impress.

From formal gowns to sharp suits, the fashion choices at SoNA are as much a topic of discussion as the speech itself.
