The automotive industry in South Africa kicked off 2025 with a major shake-up, and Suzuki is at the center of it all.
Not only did the new Suzuki Swift claim the title of South Africa’s best-selling car in January, but Suzuki Auto South Africa also climbed the ranks to become the country’s second best-selling vehicle brand, surpassing Volkswagen.
According to reports from The Citizen and official sales data released by NAAMSA (National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa), Suzuki set multiple new records, proving that the Japanese automaker has firmly cemented its place in the local market.
Record-Breaking Sales for Suzuki
Suzuki’s momentum has been undeniable, with a staggering 6,399 new vehicles sold in January 2025.
This figure beats its previous record, set in November 2024, by 370 units.
The sales breakdown reveals 4,534 dealer sales and 1,865 fleet, rental, and government sales, showcasing strong demand across different sectors.
But the real star of the show was the fourth-generation Suzuki Swift, which led the charge with 2,628 units sold—the highest monthly sales for the model since June 2022, when 1,925 units were sold.
Henno Havenga, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Suzuki Auto South Africa, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming response from South African consumers, stating that the company is “humbled by these achievements” and thrilled to see the new Swift embraced so quickly.
A Shift in South Africa’s Best-Selling Cars
What makes Suzuki’s win even more impressive is that the Swift is the first fully imported car to take the number one spot in a very long time.
Typically, the country’s best-selling vehicles are locally produced models, such as:
- Volkswagen Polo Vivo – 2,549 units
- Ford Ranger – 1,858 units
- Isuzu D-Max – 1,413 units
By outselling these well-established, locally assembled bakkies and hatchbacks, Suzuki has proven that South Africans are more than willing to invest in imported vehicles when they offer the right combination of affordability, fuel efficiency, and reliability.
South Africa’s Car Market Shows Positive Growth
After a challenging 2024, the South African car market finally showed signs of recovery in January 2025. Overall vehicle sales jumped 10.4% year-on-year, rising from 42,023 units in January 2024 to 46,398 units in January 2025.
- New passenger vehicle sales saw a massive 18.3% increase, growing from 29,181 to 34,530 units.
- Light commercial vehicle sales, however, took a hit, declining 9.1% from 10,894 to 9,901 units.
This shift suggests that while bakkies remain popular in South Africa, more consumers are opting for budget-friendly and fuel-efficient passenger vehicles—a trend that Suzuki has clearly capitalized on.
