Sheffield United are close to finalizing the loan deal for Crystal Palace defender Rob Holding until the end of the season.
The 29-year-old has struggled for game time since his £4 million move from Arsenal in September 2023, making just a single appearance for the Eagles.
Holding’s Fallout with Palace Manager
Holding’s lack of involvement this season can be traced back to a fallout with manager Oliver Glasner.
After Palace’s 2-0 defeat to West Ham in August, Holding was left out of the matchday squad, and following the match, he questioned Glasner about a post-match warm down for the players who weren’t involved in the game.
This led to Holding being instructed to train with the under-21s, and his relationship with the manager soured from there.
Glasner Confirms Holding’s Future Lies Elsewhere
Glasner, speaking to the media, confirmed that Holding would not return to first-team training despite Palace’s defensive struggles.
The Palace manager acknowledged the situation, saying that while there was no issue with Holding personally, the final decision about his future would rest with all parties involved, including Holding and interested clubs.
“Everything is clear between Rob and me,” Glasner explained.
“If a club wants him and Rob is open to it, a solution will come, but it requires agreement from both clubs and Rob.”
Chris Wilder Seeks Defensive Reinforcements
With Sheffield United pushing for a return to the Premier League, manager Chris Wilder has been actively seeking defensive reinforcements this January.
Holding’s experience in the top flight could provide the Blades with much-needed cover as they look to secure promotion from the Championship.
As negotiations continue, it seems likely that Holding will move to Sheffield United on loan, providing both him and the club with an opportunity to move forward after a difficult season at Crystal Palace.
