CAFOD Intensifies Humanitarian Efforts in Goma as Violence in Eastern DRC Forces Hundreds of Thousands to Flee

As the violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) intensifies, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) has increased its humanitarian response to support those affected.

Goma, a city already grappling with the repercussions of ongoing conflict, is facing an urgent humanitarian crisis.

Rising Need for Aid as Conflict Worsens

CAFOD’s latest report, released on January 29, highlights the deteriorating situation in Goma.

The aid agency, part of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, emphasizes the growing need for urgent assistance as violence continues to devastate the region.

“Our local experts are on the ground, working tirelessly to support families caught in the conflict,” CAFOD stated.

“We are doing everything we can to provide food, water, and other forms of emergency aid to those who need it most.”

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Goma

Bernard Balibuno, CAFOD’s country representative in the DRC, described the situation in Goma as “very serious.”

The city is under immense pressure, with hundreds of thousands of people displaced as violence forces many to flee their homes.

“The humanitarian needs here are vast,” Balibuno continued.

“Goma has essentially been shut down due to the fighting, leaving people with no access to basic necessities.”

M23 Rebels Seize Control of Goma

The violence in the region escalated when the Rwandan-backed rebel group, March 23 (M23), took control of Goma on January 27.

Their capture of the city has further complicated efforts to provide aid and safety to the affected populations.

CAFOD’s increased presence and support are vital in meeting the urgent needs of those impacted by the violence.

The agency is working with local experts to ensure they can respond to the growing crisis and provide aid to as many people as possible during these difficult times.
