A major announcement has come from one of Britpop’s most beloved figures – Louise Wener, the lead singer of the 90s indie band Sleeper, has revealed her return to music after a 20-year hiatus.
Wener, now 58, appeared on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X to share the exciting news about her band’s comeback.
A Trip Down Memory Lane: The 90s Britpop Scene
Sleeper made a name for itself in the 90s with hits like “Nice Guy Eddie” and “What Do I Do Now?”.
The band was also part of the legendary Blur Parklife tour in 1994, rubbing elbows with the biggest names of the era.
However, their time on the road wasn’t without its drama.
Wener humorously recalled how her band nearly got booted off the tour for sneaking into Blur’s dressing room and destroying their prized cheese platter.
As she recalled to The Guardian, it was a “drunken and boorish” mistake that almost cost them their place on the iconic tour.
Life After Britpop: From Music to Novels
After the band’s split in 1998, Louise Wener transitioned to a new career as a novelist, writing several books, including her autobiography Different for Girls: My True-Life Adventures in Pop.
While she focused on her family life with her husband Andy McLure and their two children, Wener’s music career took a back seat.
However, Sleeper’s 2017 reunion tour marked the beginning of a new chapter, with the band releasing two albums in recent years: The Modern Age in 2019 and This Time Tomorrow in 2020.
Facing Stage Fright: A New Kind of Challenge
In a candid conversation with Chris Moyles, Wener opened up about the surprising challenge she faced when Sleeper returned to the stage.
For the first time in her career, she experienced severe stage fright, feeling as if she couldn’t go through with the performance.
But with a little help from music legend Courtney Love and some red lipstick, Wener managed to power through and deliver a memorable performance, vowing not to let it affect her again.
A New Era for Sleeper: Exciting New Music in the Works
Now, two decades after their heyday, Wener teased fans with the news that Sleeper is working on “amazing” new music.
She shared that she’s currently demoing new material and is excited about the fresh direction the band is heading in.
Her passion for music is clear, and fans are eager to see what the band’s next chapter will bring.
It seems that Sleeper is far from finished, and with Wener back at the helm, there’s plenty more to come from this iconic 90s band.
Keep an ear out for their new tunes, and don’t forget to catch Wener’s candid stories on The Chris Moyles Show every weekday morning.
