A brutal attack in the Bavarian town of Aschaffenburg has left two victims dead and two others seriously injured.
The horrific incident occurred at around 11:45 a.m. in Schontal Park, when a suspected asylum seeker, armed with a knife, ambushed a group of children from a daycare.
A two-year-old child and a 41-year-old man tragically lost their lives in the attack.
The local police swiftly arrested a 28-year-old man, identified as Enamullah O. from Afghanistan, near the scene of the crime.
Suspect Has Mental Health Issues, According to Authorities
The suspect, who had been living in asylum accommodation in the area, had previously been known to have psychological problems.
Investigators confirmed that the suspect had followed a group of five young children before launching the violent attack.
Eyewitnesses reported that the man was detained by police in a headlock shortly after the incident.
Authorities also confirmed that two other people were seriously injured and are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital.
Large-Scale Search and Quick Arrest
Following the attack, police launched an extensive search for the suspect.
They managed to apprehend him quickly in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene, with the suspected weapon, a knife, recovered at the location. Train services in the area were temporarily halted as the suspect tried to flee along the nearby railway tracks, but he was swiftly detained by police.
Motive of the Attack Remains Unclear
As of now, the motive behind the violent attack remains unclear.
The police have urged the public to refrain from speculation and emphasized that investigations into the background of the crime are ongoing.
A second person, who was a witness to the attack, was also arrested for questioning, although no other suspects have been identified.
Bavarian Authorities React to the Tragedy
The governor of Bavaria, Markus Söder, condemned the attack, calling it a “terrible day for all of Bavaria.”
He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the innocent child and the man who died while trying to help.
Germany’s Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, also expressed her condolences, offering sympathy to the families of the victims and assuring that the investigation would seek to uncover the full truth behind the violent act.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Authorities are calling on anyone who may have witnessed the attack or who has relevant photos or videos to come forward to assist with the investigation.
