Sometimes, even the professionals get into sticky situations.
That’s exactly what happened to 31-year-old locksmith Peter Macann, who found himself locked out of his own van after his dog accidentally hit the central locking button.
The unexpected turn of events occurred while Macann was on his way to a job earlier this month.
A Routine Stop Turns into a Lockout
Macann, who is fairly new to the locksmith trade, had stopped at a service station on January 11 to put air in his van’s tires.
What should have been a quick pit stop soon turned into a bit of a nightmare.
As he went to pay for the air, his French bulldog accidentally stepped on the central locking button inside the van, locking Macann out with his keys still inside the ignition.
With all of his tools stuck in the van and no way to get in, Macann found himself in a bit of a panic.
Instead of calling another locksmith or admitting to his customer that he’d locked himself out, he turned to Facebook to ask for help.
A Call for Help on Facebook
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Macann posted on a local social media group, explaining his predicament and mentioning that he was a locksmith.
His post quickly gained attention, with some people humorously commenting about the situation.
One person even joked, “One tool is left standing outside in the cold.”
As luck would have it, Macann’s two dogs, Bella and Vinnie, accidentally helped solve the problem.
In a surprising twist, the dogs managed to step on the central locking button once more, unlocking the van and allowing him to retrieve his keys.
A Lesson Learned for the Locksmith
Although he was relieved to be back in his van, Macann couldn’t help but feel a bit embarrassed when he had to explain the situation to his client.
“I just blamed the delay on traffic,” he admitted.
The incident, however, taught him a valuable lesson.
He now plans to carry a spare set of keys with him to avoid any future lockout situations.
Additionally, Macann acknowledged that he normally travels with his dogs in the van, but from now on, he’ll be extra cautious.
His dogs are often in the car with a harness, but he plans to ensure they are securely strapped in to prevent any accidental button presses in the future.
The Importance of Securing Pets in Vehicles
While there is no specific law dictating how dogs should travel in vehicles, organizations like the RAC recommend using a proper harness or dog seat belt to secure pets.
Not only does this prevent accidents like Macann’s, but it also keeps everyone safe during car rides.
