A heartbreaking moment was captured on dashcam footage when Nasir Al Soaimi, a 19-year-old asylum seeker, crashed into the back of nurse Clare Kehoe’s car while fleeing from police.
The crash, which occurred just three weeks before Kehoe’s wedding, left her with a fractured spine and pelvis.
She had to rely on crutches and painkillers to get through her “dream” wedding, which was deeply impacted by the incident.
The Devastating Impact on Clare Kehoe’s Life
Kehoe, a dedicated nurse, was left with severe injuries that prevented her from working for months.
She was also unable to go on her honeymoon in Paris, which she had eagerly planned.
The emotional and physical toll of the crash is still ongoing, as Kehoe continues to receive physiotherapy.
The injuries she sustained from the crash also took a significant toll on her ability to be there for her loved ones, including her mother in Scotland.
Speaking about the incident, Kehoe described how it disrupted her wedding day, as she had to rely on strong painkillers and crutches, even for dancing during the reception.
“It impacted me massively on my dream day,” she said, explaining how her physical limitations prevented her from greeting guests or fully enjoying the celebration.
The crash also led to her losing the opportunity for a honeymoon, as her mobility was severely restricted.
Al Soaimi’s Reckless Actions and Sentence
Al Soaimi, who had no driving license or insurance and had never passed a driving test, was behind the wheel of an uninsured black Citroen when the crash occurred.
Dashcam footage showed him speeding at 58mph in a 30mph zone while attempting to flee from the police.
The police had attempted to pull him over after discovering that his vehicle was not insured, but Al Soaimi continued driving before ultimately colliding with Kehoe’s car on April 1, 2024.
At the time of the crash, Al Soaimi was living in the UK after moving there in 2016 from Kuwait.
He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without a license, and driving without insurance.
As a result, he was sentenced to 28 months in prison, along with a two-year road ban after his release.
The court also considered the possibility of Al Soaimi’s deportation following his sentence.
The Aftermath and Al Soaimi’s Personal Struggles
Al Soaimi’s reckless driving not only caused significant harm to Kehoe, but also left him with serious injuries of his own.
He suffered bleeding on the brain, a broken arm, seven broken ribs, and multiple fractures to his right leg.
He underwent three surgeries following the crash.
His defense lawyer, Rachel Hedworth, noted that Al Soaimi was remorseful for his actions, adding that he had no prior convictions and had endured his own struggles due to the accident.
The court heard that Al Soaimi had expressed that he didn’t know a license and insurance were required to drive in the UK.
However, Judge Anthony Dunne made it clear that this ignorance was not an excuse, especially considering the devastating consequences of his actions.
The Judge’s Verdict and Future Considerations
In his statement, Judge Dunne emphasized how Al Soaimi should never have been driving that night, as he lacked both the necessary qualifications and the legal requirement to drive.
He also acknowledged the fact that, despite the severity of the crash, no one was killed, highlighting the sheer danger of Al Soaimi’s actions.
Following the conviction, there is a possibility that Al Soaimi may face deportation after completing his prison sentence.
The Secretary of State is reviewing his case due to the length of his sentence, which exceeds the 12-month threshold for criminal deportation.
The future of his immigration status now rests in the hands of the authorities.
This tragic story serves as a reminder of the far-reaching consequences of reckless driving, and the lives it can irrevocably change.
