New African Biathlon is transforming the running culture in South Africa with a blend of fitness and social fun

If you thought running was just about putting one foot in front of the other, think again! A new fitness movement is shaking up South Africa’s running scene, and it’s about more than just breaking a sweat.

Introducing the African Biathlon—a fresh, vibrant take on running that blends fitness, culture, and social fun.

Launched by the Nedbank Running Club, the country’s largest running community, this innovative event is all about making running more engaging, inclusive, and, most importantly, enjoyable.

Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just looking to get active, this new trend is something you don’t want to miss.

What is the African Biathlon?

Forget the traditional biathlon that involves skiing and shooting—South Africa’s sunny climate calls for something different! The African Biathlon brings together two exciting elements:

  • A 5km Run – Open to everyone, whether you’re a beginner or a pro.
  • A Post-Run Experience – The fun part! Participants can choose their way to celebrate, from coffee hangouts and local art tours to wine tastings or even a dance party.

This unique format allows runners to shape their own experience, ensuring every event feels fresh, exciting, and personal.

Why South Africa Needs the African Biathlon

Running is more than just exercise—it’s a way to build community.

Studies show that 77% of local runners wish they had more opportunities to connect with others through running.

The African Biathlon aims to fill this gap by turning solo runs into shared experiences filled with energy and camaraderie.

Edward Mothibi, Comrades Marathon champion and Nedbank Running Club member, is a huge supporter of the movement.

“The African Biathlon isn’t just about fitness—it’s a cultural celebration.

It’s about running, connecting, and having fun together,” he says.

When and Where Can You Join?

The African Biathlon officially kicks off in Johannesburg from February to March 2025.

Key running crews like Benchwarmers Running Club, Social Running Club, and Vault Running Club will play a major role in driving this movement, making sure every event is filled with passion and community spirit.

Each event will feature a 5km run, followed by a lively post-run experience chosen by the community.

Whether you’re a casual jogger or a competitive runner, there’s a place for you in this growing movement.

You Help Shape the Experience

One of the most exciting aspects of the African Biathlon is that runners get to decide what happens after the run! Through community voting, participants can choose their preferred post-run activities, making every event a true reflection of South Africa’s rich diversity and creativity.

Khensani Nobanda, Nedbank Group Executive for Marketing and Corporate Affairs, shares her enthusiasm: “The African Biathlon is more than a fitness initiative; it’s a celebration of community and culture.

For those starting the year with fitness goals, this is a fresh and exciting way to stay motivated while having fun.”
