Nadiya Hussain, the talented chef and winner of The Great British Bake Off, has opened up about an important lesson she hopes to teach her 14-year-old daughter.
Speaking candidly, Nadiya revealed her lifelong struggle with self-image and the powerful lesson she wants to pass on to her children.
In a recent interview with Prima Magazine, the 40-year-old mother of three, based in Leeds, shared her heartfelt desire for her daughter to embrace self-love, saying, “If I can just teach my daughter to love herself, that’s my job done.”
A Journey Through Self-Doubt and Body Image Struggles
Nadiya, who grew up in a British Bangladeshi household, has spent much of her life wrestling with body image.
As a child, she felt different from her siblings, remembering moments of shame for being “bigger” than them.
“I felt shame because I was bigger than they were,” she confessed.
“I look back now and think, ‘Really?’” Despite her achievements and success, including her popular cookbook Rooza, inspired by Ramadan and Eid, she still faces challenges in her own self-acceptance. Nadiya revealed that she continues to struggle with body image, especially during photo shoots.
“I can’t look at the cameras,” she admitted.
“Even to this day, I will pick myself apart… but I remind myself it’s okay. Let’s move on.”
Facing Health Challenges and Learning to Prioritize Self-Care
In addition to her personal battles with self-image, Nadiya has also had to navigate health issues.
In October, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with two autoimmune diseases, a condition she will live with for the rest of her life.
Reflecting on her health journey, Nadiya shared how stress and exhaustion played a significant role in her diagnosis.
“If I think about how hard I’ve worked over the past nine years since winning Bake Off, I think that stress and exhaustion is a huge part in my diagnosis,” she explained.
Despite the challenges, Nadiya is grateful for the support she receives from her family and emphasizes the importance of taking care of oneself, advising others to “learn to look out for yourself and know when you need to stop.”
A Balanced Approach to Family, Fame, and New Hobbies
At 40, Nadiya is focused on balancing her career, motherhood, and personal health
. Since winning The Great British Bake Off in 2015, she has published multiple cookbooks and even baked for the late Queen Elizabeth II.
But now, Nadiya finds herself prioritizing her own well-being and being there for her children.
“I want to be around to see them grow up,” she said.
“I can’t guarantee what illnesses I may have in the future, but for now, I can look after myself.”
In addition to her culinary skills, Nadiya has also discovered a new passion for archery.
“I go down to the woods and do archery, just to let off some steam,” she shared.
“I don’t know what I’m going to pick up next, but my aim is quite good.”
Through her journey, Nadiya continues to inspire others with her honesty, resilience, and dedication to family, health, and self-love.
