Borussia Dortmund Holds Secret Meeting With Ralf Rangnick in Salzburg Over Managerial Vacancy Amid Struggling Bundesliga Season

Borussia Dortmund is actively seeking a new manager, and reports suggest the club recently reached out to a familiar face in European football.

The German team allegedly held a discreet meeting with Ralf Rangnick, the former Manchester United boss, to discuss the possibility of him stepping in temporarily.

Rangnick’s Current Commitment

According to Sky Sports, the meeting took place on Monday in Salzburg, where Dortmund made their pitch to Rangnick.

They hope he’ll take over until the end of this season.

However, Rangnick’s situation is complicated, as he remains under contract with the Austrian national team until December 2025.

Sky’s sources note that Rangnick is likely to turn down Dortmund’s offer, citing his current role in international management.

Despite this, he is still considered one of the leading candidates for the job, along with another experienced coach, Niko Kovac, the former Bayern Munich manager.

Kovac Also in the Mix

While Rangnick seems to be leaning towards a rejection, Kovac has also been a topic of discussion for Dortmund.

The club reportedly spoke with the Croatian manager last Friday.

However, like Rangnick, Kovac is not keen on taking on a temporary role.

The Motivation Behind the Search

Dortmund’s push for a new manager comes after the club’s decision to part ways with Nuri Sahin.

The team currently sits in tenth place in the Bundesliga, trailing Bayern Munich by 20 points.

As the pressure builds, the club is exploring its options to revive their season.

Rangnick’s Previous Experience

Though Rangnick is reportedly not interested in the role at Dortmund, his managerial past is noteworthy.

He briefly took charge of Manchester United in the 2021-22 season after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Despite an underwhelming run that saw United finish sixth, Rangnick found success with the Austrian national team, guiding them to Euro 2024 qualification and topping a tough group that included France, the Netherlands, and Poland.

Unfortunately, Austria’s Euro campaign ended in a 2-1 defeat to Turkey in the last 16, but Rangnick’s work with the national team showed his capabilities.

Dortmund’s Other Transfer Interests

Along with managerial talks, Borussia Dortmund has reportedly been exploring the possibility of signing Marcus Rashford from Manchester United.

However, the England forward’s hefty wages, reportedly £350,000 a week, make a move highly unlikely.

Additionally, Dortmund is eyeing Brentford’s Kevin Schade, but his £45 million price tag could present a significant challenge for the club.

With multiple hurdles ahead, it’s clear that Dortmund’s search for a manager—and potential player signings—will continue to unfold in the coming weeks.
