The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) stood firm on Sunday in support of its long-standing refugee program, calling it a “work of mercy” after receiving criticism from Vice President JD Vance regarding its stance on immigration issues.
Vance Responds to USCCB’s Criticism of Immigration Policies
The tensions started during an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” with Vice President Vance, who is Catholic.
Host Margaret Brennan had asked Vance to address the USCCB’s recent criticisms of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, particularly the decision to end the restrictions on immigration arrests at “sensitive locations,” such as churches.
Vance, in his response, expressed disappointment as a practicing Catholic.
He argued that the bishops needed to reflect on their position, especially considering the significant funding they receive for resettling immigrants.
Vance Questions Motivations Behind USCCB’s Actions
Vance questioned the true motivations of the USCCB, suggesting that the organization’s concerns might not be purely humanitarian.
“When they receive over $100 million to help resettle illegal immigrants, are they worried about humanitarian concerns? Or are they actually worried about their bottom line?” he asked.
He reiterated the need for the U.S. government to enforce immigration laws and prioritize the protection of American citizens.
Calls for More Effective Immigration Enforcement
When asked whether he thought the bishops were “actively hiding criminals from law enforcement,” Vance criticized the USCCB for not supporting what he considered common-sense immigration enforcement.
He expressed hope that, as a devout Catholic, the bishops would reconsider their position and align with the priorities of the American people.
The exchange highlights the ongoing debate around immigration policies and the role of religious organizations in shaping public opinion on these issues.
