Manchester United’s struggles have often been a point of criticism for Rio Ferdinand, but following their recent win against Rangers in the Europa League, the former United star has shown rare praise for the squad.
Ferdinand highlighted a key improvement that he attributes to manager Ruben Amorim’s leadership after United narrowly secured a 2-1 victory with a late goal from Bruno Fernandes.
Effort Over Perfection in Recent Performances
Despite United’s ongoing issues with creating chances and defending against counterattacks, Ferdinand saw a noticeable shift in one important aspect of the team’s play: effort.
The match against Rangers was far from flawless, but Ferdinand noticed a change in the intensity and commitment on the field.
“I’ve questioned effort, application, and desire in the past,” Ferdinand shared during his TNT Sports analysis.
“But now, I’m not seeing that, and it’s a pleasing thing.”
He emphasized that, while the performance was not perfect, the players’ desire to fight for results was now evident, something that had been lacking in previous seasons.
Ruben Amorim’s Impact on the Squad
Amorim, who took over after the chaotic reign of Erik ten Hag, has made it his mission to change the culture within the team.
His no-nonsense approach has already resulted in some players stepping up, though others, like Marcus Rashford, have reportedly been unhappy and are contemplating leaving.
Ferdinand particularly praised Amorim’s ability to instill a higher level of effort in the squad.
He noted that the team was no longer just going through the motions but actively trying to manage the game and control play, a significant improvement from their previous lackluster performances.
Challenges Ahead for United and Amorim
Although there has been progress in terms of effort, United’s overall performance still leaves much to be desired.
Currently sitting 13th in the Premier League, they are 10 points above the relegation zone and far from the top four.
United will need to continue improving if they are to secure a much-needed victory when they face Fulham at Craven Cottage next.
One additional concern for Amorim and United is the future of Alejandro Garnacho, with the young talent being linked to a move to Chelsea.
Amorim, however, has not ruled out the possibility of Garnacho staying, stating, “I’m focused on the games and he’s here.
Let’s see in the next days.”
As the transfer window remains open, United’s manager emphasized that anything could happen before the window closes.
