Manchester United has made an initial offer of £23 million for Lecce’s 20-year-old wing-back, Patrick Dorgu.
This move comes after a round of talks held in Milan on Tuesday.
United’s director of football negotiations, Matt Hargreaves, sat down with agents Frank Trimboli and Leon Angel, along with Lecce’s president, Saverio Sticchi Damiani.
Despite the bid, Lecce wasn’t planning to sell Dorgu this transfer window.
“We explained to Manchester that our aim is to keep our key players, especially Dorgu,” Damiani shared.
United’s Strategy to Strengthen the Squad
Dorgu is one of the options Manchester United is considering to strengthen their squad, especially with manager Ruben Amorim gearing up to allow Antony’s departure on loan to Real Betis.
United is actively looking to bolster its squad, with Dorgu catching their eye as a potential addition to the left-wing-back role.
Standing at 6ft 2in, Dorgu also has the versatility to play as a winger. He’s already capped four times for Denmark and impressed fans with his quick rise through the ranks.
Previous Targets and Challenges
Initially, United had their sights set on Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes, but the deal proved difficult due to high costs.
Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez was another potential target but would also come with a hefty price tag.
Despite these challenges, Amorim remains keen to reinforce the squad.
With United set to face Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday and still in the FA Cup, Amorim is working to ensure he has the best possible options moving forward.
Antony’s Departure and Dorgu’s Background
Terms for Antony’s move to Real Betis are nearly finalized, though some final details remain.
As Amorim evaluates the current squad, Manchester United is continuing its efforts to secure additional talent.
Dorgu’s contract with Lecce runs until 2029, making him an attractive prospect for United.
Starting his career in Copenhagen at Husum Boldklub, Dorgu later joined Nordsjaelland’s youth academy.
In 2022, he signed with Lecce, and by 2023, he made his senior debut.
Since then, Dorgu has become a regular starter for Lecce, missing just one league match this season due to a red card.
In September, Dorgu earned his first senior international cap for Denmark, scoring a stunning goal just 42 seconds into his debut match against Switzerland.
What’s Next?
As United pursues Dorgu, the future of their transfer window and team composition hangs in the balance.
Time will tell whether Lecce will part ways with their prized wing-back or if United will have to look elsewhere to fill this crucial position.
