Mamelodi Sundowns part ways with Manqoba Mngqithi as the coach seeks his next project outside South Africa

Manqoba Mngqithi’s sudden departure from Mamelodi Sundowns over a month ago came as a surprise to many in the football world.

His sacking, alongside the release of two other coaches, left fans and pundits alike questioning the reasons behind such a decision.

Sundowns Moves Forward with Cardoso

After Mngqithi’s exit, Sundowns appointed Miguel Cardoso, marking a shift in the club’s coaching staff.

Initially, when Mngqithi stepped in after Rhulani Mokwena’s departure, there was uncertainty about whether Sundowns would hire a new head coach or let Mngqithi continue.

Despite this uncertainty, he took the team into pre-season, with Steve Komphela and Romain Folz assisting him.

Pressure Mounted on Mngqithi

Things seemed to be going well for Mngqithi at first.

He even signed a new contract, which appeared to solidify his position as head coach.

However, despite Sundowns sitting atop the Betway Premier League, the team suffered a shock defeat in the Carling Knockout Cup final against Magesi FC.

Adding to the pressure, Sundowns’ poor start in the CAF Champions League, with two consecutive losses, made it their worst opening yet in the competition.

What’s Next for Mngqithi?

Now that he is no longer with Sundowns, questions have been raised about where Mngqithi will go next.

In a recent conversation with Soccer-Laduma, Mngqithi’s agent, Mike Makaab, provided some insight into the coach’s next steps.

He confirmed that they are taking their time to carefully consider future opportunities.

Agent Talks About Mngqithi’s Future

“We’ve had some great discussions, but there’s no rush,” Makaab explained.

“Manqoba is not a young coach, but he’s not old either.

He needs a project that truly inspires him, something meaningful and purposeful. That’s what we’re looking for next.

We’re even considering opportunities outside of South Africa. For now, it’s all low-key and we’re not rushing into anything.”

No Offers Yet for Mngqithi

Makaab also clarified that Mngqithi has yet to receive any offers since leaving Sundowns, stating, “No offers have come through yet, mainly because we haven’t actively put his name out in the market.”

Where Could Mngqithi Go Next?

As Mngqithi reflects on his next move, it remains to be seen which club will offer the coach a new challenge.

After a decade at Sundowns, the possibilities are endless.

Fans are curious to know where he might land next, with many hopeful that he will take on a project that matches his experience and ambitions.
