Pope Francis Praises Swiss Guard’s Service and Family Support in Rome During Jubilee Year

As millions of pilgrims prepare to visit Rome for the jubilee year, Pope Francis has taken a moment to recognize the dedication and service of the Swiss Guard.

In a special audience marking the 25th anniversary of the Pontifical Swiss Guard Foundation, the Pope praised the guards for their unwavering commitment, especially as they assist in managing the influx of visitors.

Changing Times, Same Mission

Speaking to the audience, Pope Francis acknowledged how much the role of the Swiss Guard has evolved over the years.

However, he emphasized that their primary mission has remained constant: protecting the Pope.

He noted that this responsibility has now expanded to include supporting the many pilgrims who come to meet him.

“The work of the Swiss Guard has changed considerably, but its aim remains always that of protecting the pope,” Pope Francis said.

He further highlighted how the guards’ patience and dedication to welcoming pilgrims from all around the world have become crucial in maintaining the smooth flow of visits.

Supporting Families and Building Community

The Pontifical Swiss Guard Foundation, which was established during the Great Jubilee of 2000, plays an essential role in supporting the families of the guards.

This includes offering educational opportunities and aiding in professional development.

Pope Francis expressed his admiration for the growing number of married guards, noting how they now balance their roles as protectors of the Pope with their responsibilities as fathers and husbands.

“I like the fact that the guards get married; I like the fact they have children, they have a family,” the Pope said, emphasizing how important it is for the guards to maintain strong family ties while serving the Vatican.

In celebrating the Swiss Guard’s service and the support provided by the foundation, Pope Francis highlighted the importance of family and community in the life of the guards, showing how their commitment extends beyond just their professional duties.
