German Neo-Nazi Convicted of Hate Crimes Changes Name and Gender in Attempt to Be Moved to Women’s Prison

German Neo-Nazi Convicted of Hate Crimes Changes Name and Gender in Attempt to Be Moved to Women’s Prison

A German man convicted of hate crimes has taken an unusual step in an attempt to change his living conditions behind bars.

Sven Liebich, a 53-year-old neo-Nazi, has legally changed his name and gender in an effort to be moved from a men’s prison to a women’s facility.

The Crime and the Conviction

Liebich was sentenced last year after being convicted of inciting hatred and defamation.

His 18-month sentence was handed down for his actions, which included organizing far-right rallies and promoting Nazi ideology, all while wearing associated symbols and attire.

Despite the gravity of the charges, Liebich has now chosen to identify as Marla-Svenja Liebich in a move that he hopes will lead to his transfer to a female-only prison.

The Legal Maneuver

The decision to legally change his identity comes after a recent reform to Germany’s self-identification law, which allows individuals to change their gender and name on official documents without undergoing psychiatric evaluations.

While this process enables gender changes on paper, it does not automatically guarantee a transfer to a women’s prison.

A spokesperson for the local prosecutor’s office emphasized that each case will be reviewed individually, and there is no certainty that Liebich will be moved.

The change in civil status law, as explained by the federal criminal register, does not alter the individual’s criminal record or physical identity.

A Controversial Move

Liebich’s appeal for a gender change and subsequent prison relocation has stirred significant controversy.

Despite identifying as a woman on paper, reports indicate that Liebich has not altered his appearance and continues to have a long beard.

Authorities remain skeptical of the motivations behind his request, especially considering his history of far-right extremism.

The convicted neo-Nazi is known for organizing “Montagsdemo,” a weekly right-wing demonstration in the city of Chemnitz, where he has earned a reputation as a prominent figure in the far-right movement.

His actions have led to him being labeled a “right-wing extremist” by local authorities.

Impact of New Gender Change Rules

The recent changes to Germany’s laws regarding self-identification were introduced in November 2024.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz hailed the reform as a step toward modernizing the country and promoting respect for trans, intersex, and non-binary people, stating that it does not diminish the rights of others.

However, in cases like Liebich’s, the law’s impact on criminal justice procedures remains contentious.

As Liebich’s case unfolds, it raises significant questions about the potential misuse of gender change laws and the complexities involved in balancing legal reforms with public safety concerns.
