With the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy just around the corner, South Africa’s cricket team, the Proteas, could be dealing with some significant injuries to key players.
Two of their star players are facing fitness concerns, and it’s creating uncertainty for the team’s lineup ahead of the tournament.
Anrich Nortje Ruled Out Due to Back Injury
On Wednesday, it was officially confirmed that fast bowler Anrich Nortje will not be part of the upcoming SA20 and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
The 31-year-old, who has been struggling with a back injury, has not played any international cricket since the 2024 T20 World Cup.
This latest setback adds to the list of injuries that have hindered Nortje’s career.
Despite a promising start, he has only managed to play 22 ODIs for the Proteas, taking 36 wickets.
Given his injury record, Nortje has been unable to maintain a consistent presence on the field, and this has raised concerns about his availability moving forward.
Who Will Replace Nortje?
As of now, there hasn’t been any official announcement regarding Nortje’s replacement for the Champions Trophy, but many experts are suggesting that Gerald Coetzee could be the one to step into his shoes.
The Proteas are known for their strong bowling lineup, and with players like Kwena Maphaka, Wayne Parnell, Dane Paterson, and Coetzee all vying for a spot, the team is still well-equipped for the upcoming tournament.
Rassie Van Der Dussen Also a Concern
Adding to South Africa’s injury woes, there is also concern surrounding the fitness of veteran batsman Rassie van der Dussen.
During the SA20 on Wednesday, Van der Dussen injured his finger while fielding for MI Cape Town.
He had to leave the field for a brief period, and though he returned later with an ice pack on his right-hand ring finger, it remains to be seen whether this injury will affect his participation in the Champions Trophy.
The Proteas’ Opening Match Against Afghanistan
The Proteas are set to kick off their 2025 ICC Champions Trophy campaign against Afghanistan on February 21 at the National Stadium in Karachi, Pakistan.
It’s a crucial match for the team, as they hope to replicate their success from the inaugural Champions Trophy in 1998, which they won.
Since then, the team has reached the final only once, and they will be hoping to end their 27-year wait for a second title.
