What Is the Passport Index?

Every year, Henley & Partners compiles its Passport Index, which ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can visit without needing a visa in advance.

The scoring system assigns one point for every visa-free destination, including those offering visas on arrival, electronic travel authorizations (ETAs), or visitor permits upon entry.

According to the creators of the index, this scoring approach provides a clear, practical view of how “powerful” a passport truly is.

South Africa Climbs the Rankings

South Africa has seen a notable improvement in its ranking, moving up to 48th place from 52nd last year.

This change means South African passport holders now enjoy visa-free access to 106 countries, reflecting gradual progress in global mobility for the nation.

Here are the top-performing countries on the 2025 list:

1. Singapore: 195 visa-free destinations
2. Japan: 193 visa-free destinations
3. Finland, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Spain: 192 visa-free destinations
4. Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden: 191 visa-free destinations
5. Belgium, New Zealand, Portugal, Switzerland, United Kingdom: 190 visa-free destinations
