Mamelodi Sundowns are making waves in the January transfer window with a potential surprise signing of Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba.
The club, already set to secure another Bafana international, Jayden Adams from Stellenbosch FC, could be adding Mothiba to their roster as well.
Mothiba Joins Sundowns for Training Session
FARPost has reported that Mothiba, who was recently snubbed by Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club, was spotted at Sundowns’ training ground at Chloorkop.
He trained alongside some of the squad members who didn’t travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo for Sundowns’ CAF Champions League match against AS Maniema Union on Saturday.
This has raised expectations that the striker could be making his way to Sundowns in the coming days.
Mothiba, who is recovering from a knee injury, has been without a club since leaving French side Strasbourg early in 2024.
His management team is reportedly in discussions with Sundowns about his potential move, and a deal could be finalized soon.
Mothiba’s Journey and Potential Fit at Sundowns
Before his arrival at Sundowns, Mothiba was linked with Wydad Casablanca, though reports suggested he did not impress the club enough to secure a move.
Other reports also hinted at interest from Montpellier in France, but that transfer does not seem to be materializing.
Instead, Sundowns appears to be the most likely destination for the 28-year-old forward.
While Mothiba has expressed his desire to play for Sundowns in the past, his arrival raises questions about where he will fit into the squad.
The club already boasts a strong attacking lineup with Iqraam Rayners, Peter Shalulile, Arthur Sales, and Lucas Ribeiro, making it unclear where Mothiba will slot in under coach Miguel Cardoso.
Sundowns Fans Weigh In
Sundowns supporters may be feeling mixed emotions about this potential signing.
With a strong forward line already in place, many might wonder if Mothiba is truly necessary.
The question remains—how does he fit into the team’s plans? Fans are encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions in the comments section.
