It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for South African rugby teams in the Champions Cup.
While the Sharks and Bulls suffered tough defeats, the Stormers delivered a dominant performance, securing a 40-0 victory against the Sale Sharks.
Stormers’ Third Consecutive Victory Boosts Their Champions Cup Hopes
The Stormers’ commanding win saw them move into fourth place in Pool 4, continuing their strong run with their third win in a row across all competitions.
The return of some key players seems to have sparked a turnaround, with coach John Dobson expressing an upbeat mood about his team’s chances of making it to the knockout stages.
“It’s been a tough time, but we’re starting to see the benefits of having some big names back in the squad,” Dobson said after the win.
“Having Salmaan Moerat, Evan Roos, Deon Fourie, and Frans Malherbe back has made a huge difference.
We’ve started to play better, but there’s still room for improvement.”
Stormers Prepare for Tough Match Against Racing 92
Next up for the Stormers is a challenging away game against Racing 92 in Paris this Saturday at 22:00.
Dobson is optimistic but remains realistic, knowing the importance of balancing Champions Cup ambitions with their primary focus on the URC.
“We’re excited to take on Racing 92, but we must keep in mind our goal of making the playoffs in every competition,” Dobson said.
“We might make some changes, though, because after Racing 92, we face Leinster in Dublin in the URC.”
Bulls and Sharks Look to Bounce Back from Disappointing Defeats
The Bulls, coming off a heavy 49-10 loss to Castres, will face Stade Francais this Saturday at 15:00, hoping for a better performance.
Meanwhile, the Sharks, after a 20-8 defeat to Toulouse, will be seeking redemption when they travel to Bordeaux-Begles on Sunday for their 15:00 kick-off.
