The highly anticipated 2024 matric exam results will be announced on Monday, 13 January at 18:00 by the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, and her deputy, Dr. Reginah Mhaule.
The results will then be available to the candidates the following day, Tuesday, 14 January.
A Milestone for 870,000 Matriculants
Over 870,000 matriculants are eagerly awaiting their results after completing their final exams in late 2024.
For many students, this moment marks the end of their high school journey and the beginning of their next steps in education or career paths.
The results will play a crucial role in determining their futures, guiding their decisions on further studies or employment opportunities.
Legal Approval for Results Release
Earlier this week, the Pretoria High Court gave the green light for the publication of the results, ensuring the process could move forward as planned.
This legal hurdle being cleared means that students can now focus on preparing for the next phase of their lives.
Re-marking and Re-checking Exam Scripts
If any students are unhappy with their results, they have the option to request a re-mark or re-check of their exam scripts.
For a fee, students can apply for these services.
The fees are R120 for a re-mark and R30 for a re-check per subject. Additionally, students can view their scripts after re-marking or re-checking for an additional R230.
Applications for these services must be submitted within seven days after the release of the results, and results of re-marked scripts will be available from 7 March 2025.
Registration for the May/June Rewrite Exams
Students who feel they need to improve their results can also register for the May/June NSC exams.
The closing date for registration is 7 February.
However, students must ensure they meet the eligibility criteria, such as having been registered for the subject in the previous November exam or providing valid reasons for missing any exams.
Conditions for June NSC Exams
The new May/June exams, which replace the old February/March supplementary exams, allow students to either improve their results or complete missing subjects.
Candidates need to register by 7 February and ensure they meet the necessary criteria, such as having been registered for the subject in the previous November exam or having valid external paper marks.
Those who missed exams for valid reasons, such as illness or family emergencies, can also register for the June exams.
Options for Students Who Don’t Qualify for June Exams
If a student does not qualify for the June NSC exams, they still have several options.
They can re-enroll as a full-time or part-time repeater at a school or public adult education center.
Alternatively, students who are over 21 can register for the Senior Certificate (SC) exams, or they can consider vocational education and training at one of South Africa’s many FET colleges.
NSC Pass Requirements for Further Education
Students aiming for further education must meet specific pass requirements.
To qualify for a bachelor’s degree, they must achieve at least 40% for their home language and 50% for four other subjects.
For diploma studies, a minimum of 40% in the home language and 40% in three other subjects is required.
Those aiming for a higher certificate need at least 40% in their home language and 30% in the language of learning at a higher education institution.
How to Access Your Results on Your Phone
For students eager to get their results without having to wait in long lines, they can easily access their results via SMS or USSD code.
To register, simply SMS your exam number to 35658, and you’ll receive reminders and further instructions.
Alternatively, dial the USSD code 12035658# for more guidance.
These services are available to those who took the Department of Education’s National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.
Important Notes on Results Accuracy and Queries
While every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the results, students should note that there may be some omissions or errors due to technical issues.
If this happens, candidates are encouraged to contact their school, district, or provincial education department to resolve any discrepancies.
Students can also submit result queries for investigation within 30 days after the release of results.
Support for Further Education with NSFAS
For those planning to continue their studies, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offers bursaries for any course of study.
Students can contact NSFAS for more information or apply through their website to ensure they receive the financial support needed for their academic journey.
