Antony, the Brazilian winger for Manchester United, has filed a lawsuit against his former club, Ajax, accusing them of unlawfully docking his wages ahead of his £85.5 million move to Old Trafford in 2022.
The player missed training sessions and even skipped one of Ajax’s early league matches that season, despite not being injured, before his transfer to Manchester United was finalized.
The Situation at Ajax
At the time, Ajax’s then-manager, Alfred Schreuder, expressed concerns about Antony’s focus, stating he only wanted players who were fully committed to the club.
In an interview with ESPN in August 2022, Schreuder said, “We have talked about it, and I think it is a difficult situation.”
Antony’s decision to miss training led to the club imposing fines on him, which he later found had been deducted from his pay after the transfer was completed.
According to Dutch newspaper AD, Antony claims that the fines amounted to several hundred thousand euros.
A spokesperson from the Dutch national football association’s arbitration committee confirmed that the legal proceedings had started this week in Zeist, near Utrecht.
Antony filed the case six months ago, and such cases typically receive a ruling within a month of the hearing.
A Disappointing Spell at Manchester United
Antony’s time at Manchester United has been less than stellar.
While he scored on his debut in a 3-1 win against Arsenal, the winger has managed only 11 goals in total over the past three seasons.
This season, his only goal came during a 7-0 Carabao Cup victory over Barnsley.
Since then, Antony has struggled to secure a regular place in the starting lineup under manager Erik ten Hag, and he has failed to impress the club’s new manager, Ruben Amorim.
As a result, the forward has been linked with a move away from Manchester United this month.
Possible Loan Move for Antony
Antony’s agent, Junior Pedroso, confirmed that there is interest from several clubs in securing the winger on loan.
Pedroso told GiveMeSport that the player is open to a loan move if it helps him regain form and get more playing time.
“There’s concrete interest from clubs, and Antony’s future will depend on what Manchester United decides,” Pedroso said.
“If the club thinks a loan move in January would be beneficial for Antony to get more minutes and regain his confidence, we’ll explore that option.”
Among the clubs reportedly interested in Antony are Greek side Olympiacos and Spanish club Real Betis, as the player looks to turn his career around away from Manchester United.
