Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain to affect Gauteng and surrounding provinces this weekend

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for Gauteng and three neighboring provinces, with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms expected to continue.

As heavy rain persists, the forecast predicts severe weather conditions that could cause disruptions across these regions.

Severe Thunderstorms to Hit Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and North West

Residents of Gauteng, the North West, Limpopo, and the Highveld region of Mpumalanga are warned about the possibility of severe thunderstorms.

These storms may bring heavy downpours, strong winds that could cause damage, and excessive lightning in certain areas.

The weather service advises locals to remain alert throughout the weekend.

Rain and Cooler Temperatures in Pretoria and Johannesburg

In Pretoria, the rain will continue with temperatures expected to drop to 24°C. A 70% chance of rain is predicted for Saturday, with similar weather conditions expected on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg will experience afternoon thunderstorms, with temperatures peaking at 22°C.

Isolated to scattered showers and storms are expected to continue through Sunday evening.

Rain to Persist Until Monday with Cooler Weather Ahead

The heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecasted to continue in Gauteng until Monday.

However, temperatures are expected to gradually rise starting Tuesday, with less rainfall predicted in the days following.

Motorists Urged to Exercise Caution During Wet Conditions

Gauteng’s MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has urged drivers to be especially cautious in the rainy weather.

“Please be extra vigilant to avoid accidents and keep everyone safe,” she said, reminding motorists of the risks that come with wet road conditions.
