Understanding Van Reenen’s Pass

Van Reenen’s Pass, a crucial route through the Drakensberg mountains, connects Durban and Johannesburg via the N3 freeway.

The pass lies at the border of KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, with the nearby towns of Ladysmith and Harrismith providing points of reference.

Its winding roads and steep terrain are particularly challenging during adverse weather, often making it a high-risk area for accidents.

Driving Safely in Bad Weather

With severe storms forecast for KwaZulu-Natal, drivers are urged to take precautions when traveling.

Adverse weather conditions are a leading cause of accidents on South African roads. Here are essential tips for staying safe:

  • Ensure your vehicle is in good condition by checking tyres, wipers, and lights.
  • Get adequate rest before driving to stay alert.
  • Avoid loud music that may distract you.
  • Carry essential tools, including a spare tyre.
  • Keep your phone fully charged for emergencies.
  • Monitor weather and traffic updates on the radio.
  • Exercise patience and avoid risky maneuvers, such as crossing flooded roads.
