In a rare public appearance, Kim Jong-un’s family took center stage at Pyongyang’s New Year’s Eve celebration, revealing two new faces from his inner circle.
The appearance of his niece and nephew, walking hand-in-hand with their mother, Kim Yo-jong, brought attention to the potential future leadership of North Korea.
This public display has sparked fresh speculation about who will eventually take over the reins of power in the secretive regime.
The Potential Heir: Kim Yo-jong’s Son
Before this, much of the focus had been on Kim Jong-un’s daughter, Kim Ju-ae, who had been widely speculated to be the successor due to her visibility in public events.
However, the revelation of Kim Yo-jong’s son has now thrown a curveball into the conversation.
Experts like Michael Madden, founder of North Korea Leadership Watch, argue that North Korea’s leadership succession is likely to stay within the bloodline of Kim Il-sung, the country’s founding leader.
Madden asserts that Kim Yo-jong’s son could now be a serious candidate for the role, challenging the previous assumptions that Kim Ju-ae would become the leader.
Changing Perceptions of Leadership Succession
Kim Jong-un’s family history has always been shrouded in secrecy, and much of what the world knows about it comes from the country’s tightly controlled media.
The New Year’s Eve event gave the public a rare look behind the curtains.
Madden suggests that this deliberate public appearance of Kim Yo-jong’s children indicates that they may be in line for future leadership positions within North Korea’s power structure.
“With a regime and state media environment like North Korea, we only see what they let us see,” Madden explained, hinting that this appearance was part of the regime’s broader strategy to signal to both internal and external audiences that these children will play important roles in the future.
Kim Ju-ae Still in the Running for Leadership
Despite the appearance of Kim Yo-jong’s children, Madden believes that Kim Ju-ae remains the most likely candidate for leadership.
He emphasized that North Korea’s patriarchal structure still leaves significant room for a female leader, but with Kim Yo-jong’s children now in the spotlight, they could shape the future of the regime.
“I still think Kim Ju-ae is the front runner, but with Kim Yo-jong’s children, there are now at least two more individuals who will become top elites,” Madden said.
A Message to the World: North Korea’s Transparency Shift
Madden also pointed out that by publicly showcasing her children, Kim Yo-jong might be sending a message to the outside world, including the United States and South Korea.
In 2018, Kim Jong-un had told former South Korean President Moon Jae-in that he was a family man and would not seek to destroy the Korean peninsula with nuclear weapons.
This gesture by Kim Yo-jong could be interpreted as a subtle reminder of that promise, signaling North Korea’s focus on its family-driven leadership model.
Investigating the Children’s Background
In the wake of this event, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) has launched an investigation to confirm the relationship between Kim Yo-jong and the two children.
The NIS is looking into the possibility that these children are indeed hers, as their ages seem to match those of her presumed children.
While the intelligence agency remains cautious, this could provide more clarity on the internal family dynamics of North Korea’s leadership.
A Glimpse of the Future
Whether or not Kim Yo-jong’s son or Kim Ju-ae will ultimately take over as the next leader of North Korea remains uncertain.
What is clear is that the country’s leadership succession plan is evolving, and this latest family revelation has added a new layer of complexity to an already secretive and unpredictable system.
