Jacob Zuma Demands Reinstatement of His ANC Membership After Suspension Following MK Party Launch in Orlando

Jacob Zuma, the leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, is demanding that the African National Congress (ANC) reinstate his membership following his suspension.

This comes after Zuma’s controversial move to launch the MK Party, which led to charges being filed against him by the ANC for violating party rules.

Zuma’s Suspension and the ANC’s Decision

In December 2023, Zuma announced the formation of the MK Party in Orlando, Soweto, which the ANC deemed a violation of their rules.

He was charged, and a virtual disciplinary hearing was held in July 2024.

Despite his legal representation by ANC outcast Tony Yengeni, the disciplinary committee found him guilty.

Zuma appealed the decision, but the ANC’s national disciplinary committee of appeals upheld the suspension.

The Basis of Zuma’s Disagreement with the ANC

The ANC’s national disciplinary committee (NDC) determined that Zuma had breached Rule 25 of the ANC constitution.

The rule is designed to protect the organization’s integrity, and the ANC argued that his involvement with the MK Party undermined the party’s objectives.

Zuma, however, strongly rejects this accusation and believes the ANC under President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership does not have the authority to expel him from a movement he has been part of for decades.

Zuma’s Demands for Reinstatement

Zuma’s legal team, represented by the Jacob Zuma Foundation, sent a letter of demand to the ANC on Wednesday, 8 January 2025, outlining what they consider significant legal irregularities in the disciplinary process.

Foundation spokesperson Mzwanele Manyi emphasized that Zuma believes an independent review would likely find the ANC’s actions invalid.

Zuma has set a deadline for the ANC to reinstate him by 31 January 2025, warning that failure to do so may force him to take legal action to protect his rights as a member of the ANC for 65 years.

What Happens Next?

Zuma’s next steps depend on whether the ANC decides to address his demands.

If his request is not met, he may pursue legal avenues to challenge the suspension.

For now, all eyes are on the ANC’s response to this mounting pressure.
