Jacob Zuma, the leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, has formally requested the African National Congress (ANC) reinstate his membership after being suspended for his actions in launching the MK Party.
Zuma’s legal team sent a letter of demand to the ANC, challenging the suspension and calling for a resolution by the end of January 2025.
Background of Zuma’s Suspension
The ANC suspended Zuma in 2024 for violating the party’s rules.
This decision stemmed from his creation of the MK Party on December 16, 2023, in Orlando, Soweto, which the ANC argued was a breach of their constitution.
Zuma’s disciplinary hearing took place virtually in July, with former ANC member Tony Yengeni representing him.
Although Zuma appealed the suspension, the ANC’s national disciplinary committee of appeals upheld the decision, citing that his actions had undermined the party’s integrity.
Zuma’s Rejection of ANC Leadership’s Authority
Following the ruling, the Jacob Zuma Foundation made it clear that Zuma does not accept the idea that the ANC, under President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership, has the right to expel him from the organization.
Zuma, who has dedicated 65 years of his life to the ANC, firmly believes his expulsion was unjust.
Legal Challenge to ANC’s Decision
On January 8, 2025, spokesperson for the Jacob Zuma Foundation, Mzwanele Manyi, revealed that Zuma’s legal representatives have outlined several concerns in the demand letter.
These concerns pertain to both the procedural and substantive issues surrounding the ANC’s disciplinary process.
Manyi emphasized that these irregularities could lead to the suspension being overturned if reviewed independently.
Zuma’s Ultimatum to ANC
Zuma has demanded that the ANC address this issue and announce his reinstatement by January 31, 2025.
If the ANC fails to meet this deadline, Zuma may take legal action to protect his rights as a long-standing member of the party.
This development has raised questions about the future of Zuma’s relationship with the ANC and his potential return to the fold.
