Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has openly expressed his disappointment with Jack Grealish’s performances this season.
The City boss admitted that he wishes Grealish would return to the form he showed during their successful 2022-2023 Treble-winning campaign.
The comment came after Guardiola made the decision to start Savinho over Grealish in their 4-1 victory against West Ham on Saturday.
Guardiola Prioritizes Savinho’s Form Over Grealish’s Experience
Guardiola explained his reasoning for choosing the Brazilian over Grealish, noting that Savinho, who provided two assists in the match, is currently in better shape than the English winger.
He acknowledged the competition Grealish faces but emphasized that the key is for Grealish to compete with himself and show improvement.
“As much as Grealish looks at himself, he will see the competition,” Guardiola said.
“Savinho is in better shape, and that’s why I picked him.”
Grealish’s Decline Since the Treble Winning Season
Since the beginning of last season, Grealish has struggled to find the back of the net, managing only three Premier League goals and two assists.
Guardiola made it clear that he believes Grealish is capable of better performances, citing his previous level of play as evidence that he can reach that standard again.
“I know he can do it because I’ve seen him at that level,” Guardiola added.
“I want that from him in every training session and every game.”
Savinho’s Impact in the Team and the Fight for a Starting Spot
Guardiola made it clear that Savinho’s current contributions are undeniable, and he deserves his place in the starting lineup based on his recent performances.
The manager urged Grealish, and all players in his squad, to prove themselves on the field.
“I play Savinho because he produces.
Is there anyone who thinks Savinho doesn’t deserve to play right now?” Guardiola stated.
“If Grealish wants to reclaim his position, he has to fight for it every single day, every week, and every month.”
