The FBI is expanding its investigation into Shamsud-Din Jabbar’s movements and connections leading up to the deadly attack in New Orleans.
Authorities are examining various leads across the United States and abroad to understand the full extent of Jabbar’s planning and his ties to international locations.
Travel to Egypt and Canada
Special Agent Lyonel Myrthil revealed that Jabbar had traveled to Cairo, Egypt, between June 22 and July 3, 2023.
Shortly after, he flew to Ontario, Canada, on July 10 and stayed until returning to the U.S. on July 13.
Investigators are piecing together the details of his international travel to determine who he may have met and how these meetings could relate to his violent actions in New Orleans.
Recce in New Orleans
Before launching the attack, Jabbar visited New Orleans twice in the months prior to the incident.
The first visit occurred in October, followed by another in November.
During one of these trips, Jabbar recorded a video of himself cycling through the French Quarter, wearing Meta glasses.
This footage captured him riding through the very streets where he would later execute his deadly assault, driving a rented Ford F-150 EV and displaying an ISIS flag.
Details of the Attack
On the day of the attack, Jabbar wore the same Meta glasses, but did not stream the violent events live.
Surveillance footage reveals that he visited gun stores and a shop where he purchased one of the coolers used to hide explosive devices.
These coolers were later found on the streets of New Orleans, rigged with improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Fortunately, some of the devices were safely neutralized.
Pre-attack Preparations
Authorities have discovered that Jabbar had been planning the attack for months.
He had reserved the vehicle used in the assault on November 14, over six weeks prior to the event.
Investigators also uncovered bomb-making materials at his Houston home, which included hazardous chemicals and a workbench for assembling explosives.
Final Moments and Casualties
Jabbar’s rampage culminated in a violent confrontation with the police.
After crashing his rental truck, he donned a ballistic vest and helmet before firing on officers, injuring at least two.
He was eventually killed in the exchange of gunfire.
The attack claimed 14 lives, with victims ranging in age from 18 to 63.
The coroner confirmed that all victims died from blunt force injuries after being struck by Jabbar’s vehicle.
The victims hailed from various places, including Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, New Jersey, and the United Kingdom.
Investigative Progress and Looking Ahead
Authorities continue to examine Jabbar’s connections and the events leading up to the attack, including his interactions in New Orleans and abroad.
The investigation remains ongoing, as the FBI and local law enforcement work to uncover all the details behind this tragic and violent act.
