Hollywood’s biggest stars will be lighting up the red carpet this Sunday at the Golden Globe Awards, marking the first major event of the awards season.
This year, the surreal narco-musical Emilia Perez leads the movie nominations with 10, the most ever for a comedy or musical.
The Success of “Emilia Perez”
Directed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, Emilia Perez is a genre-defying film about a Mexican drug lord who transitions into life as a woman.
The film, which premiered at Cannes, has already made waves across the global film scene, earning praise for its unique storytelling.
With 10 Golden Globe nominations, the film is now poised for a strong performance at the awards, and many are predicting it could set the stage for Oscars glory in March.
As Deadline’s Pete Hammond pointed out, Emilia Perez has a real chance for success at the Globes.
He explained that its international appeal and musical elements made it stand out, especially after sweeping the European Film Awards.
A Diverse Range of Nominations
One of the standout features of the Golden Globes is the separate categories for dramas and comedies/musicals.
This expansion means a wider range of films and performances are showcased, and it allows more potential nominees to get the attention of Academy voters.
For Emilia Perez, this includes three acting nominations: Karla Sofia Gascon for the title role, along with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana.
The film will compete for the best musical or comedy category alongside other strong contenders like Wicked, Anora, and Challengers.
The Golden Globe Race in the Musical Category
Speaking of Wicked, the highly anticipated film adaptation of the Broadway musical earned four nominations, including one for Tony winner Cynthia Erivo as the iconic Elphaba.
Pop sensation Ariana Grande also received a nomination for her portrayal of Glinda.
However, film experts like Hammond suggest that Wicked might be at a disadvantage this year, as it missed some of the key nominations.
Despite this, he predicts Erivo will win the award for Best Lead Actress, where she faces stiff competition from Gascon, Anora star Mikey Madison, and others.
Changes at the Golden Globes and a More International Focus
The Golden Globes are also undergoing a transformation, having revamped their voting structure after a 2021 Los Angeles Times expose revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had no Black members.
With this change, the Globes have taken a more international approach, embracing diverse films from around the world.
One example of this shift is The Brutalist, a seven-time nominated film starring Adrien Brody as a Hungarian Jewish architect.
Hammond points out that the Globes are now more open to different kinds of movies, reflecting a more inclusive spirit in the nominations.
The Drama Film Contenders
The best drama category will see intense competition, with The Brutalist facing off against Conclave, a gripping fictionalized account of the Vatican’s political maneuverings following the death of a pope.
Other contenders for the top spot include A Complete Unknown (a Bob Dylan biopic), Dune: Part Two, Nickel Boys, and September 5, a tense thriller about the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Television Highlights
The Globes also celebrate the best in television, with The Bear leading the pack with five nominations.
Both Shogun and Only Murders in the Building scored four nominations, showing the range and quality of shows in the running.
The event promises to be just as exciting on the small screen as it is on the big screen.
What to Expect from the Golden Globes
Comedian Nikki Glaser will host the Golden Globe Awards, which take place in Beverly Hills.
The ceremony will begin at 03:00 SA time on Monday, marking the start of the Hollywood awards season with style.
