The tragic news came on Saturday that Sonny Smart, father of Georgia football coach Kirby Smart, passed away following a fall that occurred earlier this week.
Sonny, 76, had been in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl when the unfortunate accident took place on December 31.
The Fall and Surgery Complications
While walking in New Orleans on New Year’s Eve, Sonny fell and fractured his hip.
He was immediately hospitalized and underwent hip surgery.
Sadly, complications arose following the surgery, and despite his valiant fight, Sonny could not overcome his injuries.
He passed away early on Saturday morning at 12:15 a.m., surrounded by his loved ones.
Georgia’s statement expressed the family’s deep gratitude for the care Sonny received from the Ochsner hospital and medical staff during his time there.
They also requested continued prayers for the family as they cope with this heartbreaking loss.
A Well-Loved Figure in Football
Sonny Smart, originally from Columbia, Alabama, had a long and respected career as a high school football coach in Georgia.
He coached at Bainbridge High and Rabun County High, finishing with an overall record of 90-78-1. Before that, he also coached at Holtville High School in Alabama.
Sonny was a college football player at Samford University, which further fueled his passion for coaching.
Support and Condolences
Many people, including SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, have extended their condolences to the Smart family.
Sankey shared his sympathies on X, saying, “Sonny Smart touched many people in his life and we are saddened to learn of his passing.
Our sympathies go out to Kirby Smart and his family and to all who knew his dad.”
Sonny’s passing was completely unrelated to the tragic events that unfolded in New Orleans on the morning of January 1, when a man drove a truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, resulting in the loss of 15 lives.
The Smart family’s request for prayers and support has resonated deeply with the community as they navigate this difficult time.
