On New Year’s Eve, a celebration at a Massachusetts arcade took a chaotic turn when a Lego display suddenly collapsed, injuring several people.
The incident, captured on camera, left attendees shaken and in confusion.
The Event That Went Wrong
The event, a “Noon Year’s Eve celebration,” took place at In The Game arcade on Lowell Street in Peabody.
According to the arcade’s Facebook page, it was meant to be a fun and festive gathering for families to ring in the new year early.
However, things took a disastrous turn when staff attempted to launch the colorful balloon drop for the occasion.
Unfortunately, the Lego display, which had been part of the decoration, toppled over, crashing onto the crowd of spectators just as they were eagerly awaiting the balloons.
The plastic bricks fell from a height of about 12 feet, landing on the attendees below.
Minor Injuries and Hospital Visits
As a result of the fall, 10 people sustained minor injuries, with eight being rushed to nearby hospitals.
Two others chose not to seek medical treatment, but images from the scene show that both children and parents were caught in the chaos.
Peabody Fire Chief John Dowling confirmed the injuries, while WHDH news footage showed several ambulances outside the arcade transporting the injured.
A Chaotic Scene
Witnesses described the situation as chaotic, with one attendee sharing a video of the moment the display collapsed onto the crowd.
“New Year’s 2024… Hopefully this isn’t an indication of what the year 2025 is. Everyone is fine… little blood,” the witness wrote on Facebook.
Lawren Turco, who attended the event with her family, recalled the confusion that followed the incident.
“We watched the entire balloon drop and had no idea anything happened until we were leaving,” she told WBZ-TV.
“Large Lego pieces were everywhere, kids were crying, people had ice packs on their heads, and some were letting their children take the Lego pieces as souvenirs. It was pure chaos.”
What Was Planned for the Day?
According to the arcade’s website, the event was a sell-out, offering 60 minutes of unlimited gameplay, 300 prize tickets, sparkling juice for a toast at noon, party favors, and of course, the highly anticipated balloon drop.
It seems that the festivities took an unexpected turn, but it looks like the guests managed to handle the aftermath as best as they could.
