A promising young rugby player tragically passed away less than a day after suffering a minor injury during a match. Sam Staple, 15, was found dead at his grandparents’ home in Tupholme, Lincolnshire, on September 24.
He had been feeling unwell earlier that day and, despite being checked on throughout, was later discovered unresponsive by his grandmother.
The Injury and Its Aftermath
Sam had participated in a game for the Lincoln RFC under-16s the day before his death.
During the match, he grazed his right shin, an injury that required the attention of a first aider.
The next day, Sam felt unwell and stayed home from school, with family members assuming he was simply resting.
However, when his grandmother went to wake him, she found him unresponsive, and he had been sick.
Despite paramedics’ efforts, Sam was pronounced dead at the scene.
Toxicology Results and the Inquest
A post-mortem examination revealed that Sam had high levels of medication in his bloodstream at the time of his death.
The inquest into his passing, which was opened by Coroner Jayne Wilkes, has been adjourned until March 26, 2025, as further investigation continues.
A Community in Mourning
Lincoln Rugby Club expressed their deep sorrow at Sam’s passing, sharing heartfelt tributes on social media.
They remembered him as a vibrant and lively young man with a love for the game and a larger-than-life personality.
Sam was also a dedicated fan of Stockport County FC and Wasps, and his enthusiasm for rugby and his teammates was evident to everyone who saw him play.
To honor Sam’s memory, the club, along with his family, has set up The Sam Staple Memorial Fund, which will serve as a lasting tribute to this beloved young man.
