After nearly bringing football home and guiding England to significant milestones, former manager Gareth Southgate has been awarded a knighthood.
The 54-year-old, who served as England’s head coach for eight years, is now being recognized for his dedication to the sport and the country’s international football achievements.
His knighthood comes after leading the Three Lions to the finals of both Euro 2020 and 2024, and a semi-final appearance at the 2018 World Cup.
A Long-Awaited Honour
Southgate’s path to receiving this prestigious honour wasn’t without its bumps.
The New Year’s Honours list was delayed following a probe into his tax affairs, which was eventually dropped earlier this year.
Once the investigation was concluded, the way was clear for him to receive the top award for his services to football.
Despite this, Southgate’s former teammate, David Beckham, was once again left off the list, leaving fans to wonder when his turn will come.
Beckham’s Ongoing Wait
Beckham, who had hoped for a knighthood for years, had previously expressed frustration over his rejections.
In 2013, after being denied, he sent a series of expletive-laden emails to the Honours Committee.
While Beckham has worked hard to rebuild his reputation, including developing close ties with Prince William and King Charles, his wait for the honour continues.
Though some speculated that 2024 might be his year, it was Southgate who received the recognition this time.
Southgate’s Legacy as England Manager
Southgate’s reign as England’s manager was marked by significant success.
His leadership brought the national team to the finals in Euro 2020 and 2024, as well as a semi-final appearance in the 2018 World Cup.
Although there were plans to knight him after the 2020 Euro final, his situation was complicated by being placed on a ‘tax risk list’ at the time.
However, after extensive discussions between HMRC and government officials, it was confirmed that Southgate did not break any rules regarding his investments, clearing the way for the honour.
Acknowledging Other Sporting Heroes
Alongside Southgate, numerous athletes from Team GB who performed exceptionally at the Paris 2024 Olympics have also been honoured.
Keely Hodkinson, who claimed gold in the 800 metres, is awarded an MBE, as well as being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Mountain biking champion Tom Pidcock, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, is honoured with an OBE.
Rower Helen Glover, who won bronze in Paris, receives an OBE as well, adding to her impressive Olympic collection.
Team GB’s Success Celebrated
The success of Team GB at the Paris 2024 Olympics was outstanding, with the team securing 65 medals in total.
Many athletes, including rowers, swimmers, sprinters, and cyclists, were recognised for their exceptional performances.
Athletes like Duncan Scott, Dina Asher-Smith, and Katarina Johnson-Thompson received honours for their achievements, while the Paralympic team’s success in Paris also received deserved recognition.
Hannah Cockroft, who claimed two golds in the T34 events, was awarded a CBE for her outstanding performances.
More Recognitions for British Athletes
Additional athletes also received honours, with several members of the rowing team, including Lola Anderson and Emily Craig, receiving MBEs.
In swimming, William Ellard, who won gold at 18, also earned an MBE.
The world of para-sports saw similar recognition, with athletes like Tully Kearney, Samantha Kinghorn, and Alice Tai receiving OBEs for their performances.
The Paralympic team’s remarkable success at the Paris Games, which included 124 medals, was truly celebrated.
Recognition for Other Sporting Figures
The honours list also acknowledged contributions from other sports.
Martin Brundle, the former Formula 1 driver, was awarded an OBE for his broadcasting work, while football legend Alan Hansen, known for his time with Scotland and Liverpool, received an MBE.
In another significant gesture, Andrew Feyi-Waboso, father of England rugby star Immanuel, received an overseas MBE for his services to international eye care, specifically in Malawi and Nigeria.
A Year of Celebrations for Sporting Excellence
As 2024 comes to a close, this year’s honours list shines a spotlight on some of the most talented and accomplished athletes and individuals in the UK.
From Southgate’s knighthood to the recognition of countless Olympians and Paralympians, the celebrations underscore the immense dedication and success that British sports have enjoyed over the past year.
Southgate’s knighthood, in particular, marks a fitting tribute to his leadership in restoring hope to the national football team.
