A chaotic incident unfolded aboard a FlySafair flight from Durban to Cape Town on Boxing Day, December 26, 2024, when an unruly passenger, Nobuntu Mkhize, demanded alcohol and caused a scene with the cabin crew.
The altercation was filmed by passengers and quickly went viral on social media, capturing the attention of the public.
Flight Crew Restrain Unruly Passenger Mid-Flight
Despite Mkhize’s claims of being “sober as a judge,” the FlySafair crew had to take swift action to control the situation, ultimately restraining her with handcuffs mid-flight.
Videos shared online show her aggressively confronting the crew, with some witnesses noting her apparent intoxication during the incident.
Mkhize’s Claims and Association with the ANC and SABC
During the confrontation, Mkhize reportedly mentioned her affiliations with the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
She allegedly threatened that the incident would be broadcast on SABC News and claimed her political loyalty would shield her from any consequences.
However, both the ANC and SABC issued statements condemning her behavior.
The ANC labeled Mkhize’s actions as “unruly” and “unbecoming,” stressing that such behavior contradicts the movement’s values.
Similarly, the SABC expressed regret over the incident, reaffirming their commitment to encouraging respect and integrity in all staff interactions.
Immediate Consequences and Investigations
Following the altercation, Mkhize faces several repercussions.
The ANC has launched an investigation into her membership status, while FlySafair has placed her on their no-fly list due to the disruption caused during the flight.
According to the airline, interfering with crew members is a criminal offense, and they handed Mkhize over to the police upon landing in Cape Town.
The SABC also confirmed that internal measures will be taken to address Mkhize’s actions.
