Couple Who Starved Their Three-Year-Old Son to Death and Buried Him in Their Backyard in Birmingham Receive 44-Year Jail Sentence

A tragic case of child neglect has led to a lengthy prison sentence for a vegan couple, Tai and Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah, who were convicted for causing the death of their three-year-old son, Abiyah.

The couple, who lived in isolation, starved their child to death and then buried his body in their back garden.

Today, at Coventry Crown Court, the pair was sentenced to a total of 44 years for their role in the child’s death and for obstructing justice.

Neglect and Isolation

Tai, 42, and Naiyahmi, 43, chose to live off the grid, creating their own “kingdom” and rejecting mainstream society.

Their decision to raise their son without medical care contributed to his severe malnutrition and death.

Abiyah, who was already in poor health due to a restrictive vegan diet, died from a respiratory illness exacerbated by severe nutritional deficiencies, including rickets and anaemia.

Despite his condition, the couple failed to seek medical help.

Instead, they kept his body in their bed for eight days before burying him in a shallow grave in their garden in Birmingham.

Deceptive and Defiant Behavior

Throughout the investigation, Tai and Naiyahmi displayed a lack of remorse, with both showing little emotion during the trial.

They denied any intentional wrongdoing, claiming they believed their son would recover from a flu-like illness.

Tai, who had studied genetics, even admitted to using an “eight-day ritual” in an attempt to bring Abiyah back to life before opting to bury him in what he described as a sacred place.

However, evidence presented during the trial painted a starkly different picture of the couple’s neglect and disregard for their child’s well-being.

Authorities’ Missed Opportunities

Abiyah’s tragic fate could have been prevented if authorities had been more vigilant.

Police conducted multiple welfare checks on the couple, yet the child’s death went unnoticed.

During one visit, officers questioned Tai about the child’s whereabouts, but he became aggressive and obstructive, preventing any meaningful investigation.

It wasn’t until more than two years later, during a separate welfare concern involving the couple, that authorities discovered Abiyah’s body.

The Couple’s Beliefs and Isolation

Tai and Naiyahmi’s refusal to engage with any outside support system played a significant role in their son’s death.

They rejected conventional medical care and instead relied on alternative, unproven methods, like garlic and ginger, to treat Abiyah’s illness.

Their isolated lifestyle, combined with their reluctance to cooperate with authorities or share information, made it difficult for anyone to intervene.

This behavior extended beyond medical neglect, as they refused to allow anyone into their lives, even family and friends.

Post-Mortem and Investigation

A post-mortem on Abiyah’s remains confirmed the extent of his suffering.

Despite severe malnutrition and multiple bone fractures, the cause of death could not be determined due to the advanced decomposition of his body.

Experts concluded that his deteriorated condition from malnutrition and lack of medical care played a significant role in his premature death.

The couple’s claim that Abiyah died from a respiratory illness was contradicted by forensic evidence, which pointed to the effects of his neglected state as a major factor in his death.

Justice for Abiyah

The trial ended with a clear verdict of guilt, as the jury found Tai and Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah responsible for the wilful neglect that led to their son’s death.

Mr. Justice Wall described the couple’s actions as one of the worst cases of neglect he had ever encountered.

Following the conviction, police confirmed that the couple’s actions were a clear violation of their duty of care to Abiyah.

Detective Inspector Joe Davenport, who led the investigation, highlighted the couple’s attempt to hide the truth by burying their son’s body and failing to report his death to authorities.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of neglect and the importance of early intervention in situations where children are at risk.
