Ian Smith bids farewell to Neighbours as he battles terminal cancer while leaving an indelible mark on Australian television history

Ian Smith, celebrated for his portrayal of Harold Bishop on the Australian soap opera Neighbours, has announced his departure from the show due to a terminal cancer diagnosis.

The 86-year-old actor shared the heartbreaking news during an interview with Ten News, revealing that he is battling an aggressive and incurable form of cancer.

“I found out a few months back,” he said. “They expect me to… they expect me to die.”

Smith’s character Harold Bishop, a beloved figure on Neighbours since 1987, will receive a fitting send-off, according to Executive Producer Jason Herbison.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, Herbison described the farewell as an emotional tribute to Smith’s immense contributions to the series.

“Ian is deeply loved by the cast, crew, and fans alike,” he added.

A Legacy of Joy and Dedication

Network Ten issued a heartfelt statement expressing their sadness over Smith’s diagnosis.

“Ian has been the heart and soul of Neighbours since 1987,” the spokesperson said.

“He has brought joy, laughter, and inspiration to audiences around the world.”

The network emphasized their commitment to supporting Smith during this difficult time.

Smith’s tenure on Neighbours has been marked by several returns to the show after brief departures.

Having first joined in 1987, he stepped away in 1991, returned in 1996, and continued to charm audiences for over a decade.

Following subsequent exits in 2009, 2011, and 2015, he made a triumphant return in 2022, delighting fans as a series regular once more.

The Unexpected Call Back to Ramsay Street

Reflecting on his decision to return to acting after retiring in 2015, Smith shared with The Radio Times earlier this year that boredom had driven him back to the studio.

“I thought I had made enough provisions, but no,” he admitted.

“While out fishing one day, the phone rang – it was Neighbours asking if I’d come back. It took me all of a tenth of a second to say yes!”

Smith described the joy of stepping back into the role of Harold Bishop, where he films one day a week.

“What actor at 85 can experience the thrill of doing something they love, being in front of the camera, and being told they’re wonderful?” he mused.

Harold Bishop’s Memorable Journey

Over the decades, Harold Bishop’s storylines have captivated viewers with dramatic twists and heartfelt moments.

From being swept out to sea and suffering amnesia to overcoming health crises, Harold’s resilience mirrored Smith’s dedication to the character.

Smith’s on-screen chemistry with Anne Charleston, who played his wife Madge, added emotional depth to the series.

Beyond Neighbours: A Storied Career

Smith’s acting career began in the 1960s, with roles in popular Australian dramas like Homicide, Division 4, and Matlock Police.

In addition to Neighbours, he appeared in the classic Aussie soap Prisoner, stepping into a role unexpectedly when another actor failed to show up.

His career highlights also include major roles in Bellbird and The Box during the 1970s.

In 2015, Smith participated in I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Australia, showcasing his charm and wit to a broader audience.

A deeply personal chapter of his life unfolded when he discovered at age 54 that he was adopted.

His search for his birth mother, Peg Kline, led to a close bond that lasted until her passing in 2005.

A New Chapter for Neighbours

Smith’s departure coincides with Neighbours’ recent revival.

After being canceled in 2022, the show found new life on Amazon Freevee, making thousands of past episodes available to fans worldwide.

The reboot, featuring many original cast members, continues to air in multiple countries, preserving Ramsay Street’s legacy.

Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD original content for Amazon Studios, highlighted the enduring appeal of Neighbours.

“This legendary series has captivated audiences for nearly 40 years,” she said.

“With streaming, new fans can discover it, and old fans can relive their favorite moments.”

Farewell but Not Goodbye

As Ian Smith prepares to leave Neighbours, his affection for Harold Bishop remains unwavering.

Reflecting on his many departures and returns, he told TV Choice magazine, “I’ve never said goodbye to Harold in a way that keeps me happy. When I leave next time, I’ll be kind to him, and that will be that.”

Smith’s legacy as Harold Bishop, coupled with his enduring spirit, will forever be cherished by fans and the television industry alike.
