Helen Zille Announces Democratic Alliance’s Decision to Remain in Opposition Amid Failed Negotiations with ANC

In a surprising turn of events, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has decided not to join Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s proposed unity executive.

The talks with the ANC in Gauteng hit a wall, leading the DA to announce their decision to remain in opposition.

Helen Zille, DA’s federal council chairperson, made it clear that the party would not be “co-opted” by the ANC, insisting they would hold their ground in the legislature.

Just before the DA’s public announcement, ANC officials including Fikile Mbalula and Premier Lesufi were preparing to reveal the new provincial Cabinet.

Lesufi assured that the Cabinet would reflect Gauteng’s citizens, while Mbalula welcomed the DA’s choice to occupy opposition benches if dissatisfied with the Cabinet composition.

Predicting Legislative Challenges

John Steenhuisen, the DA federal leader, weighed in from Cape Town, suggesting that the ANC would face difficulties in passing budgets without DA support.

He highlighted the complex coalition-building required for the ANC to secure the necessary 41 seats out of 80.

Potential partners could include the Patriotic Alliance, the Economic Freedom Fighters, and other smaller parties, but the road ahead seems challenging.
