Assault of inmates at Springhill Institution

Two inmates were assaulted at Springhill Institution, a medium-security federal institution, on January 25, 2022, about 6:00 p.m. Staff members assessed the injured detainees and brought them to an outside hospital for treatment.

One of the detainees has since returned to the facility, while the other is still hospitalized.

The perpetrators have been identified, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Cumberland County detachment is currently investigating the incident.

The safety and security of offenders, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

CSC will also investigate the circumstances of this incident and continue to work with the police.
