Bird flu outbreak hits Kaduna poultry farms

The state government of Kaduna has confirmed the emergence of avian flu in certain of the state’s poultry farms. Over 100,000 birds have been estimated to be in risk as a result of the disease outbreak in three local government regions of the state.

Kaduna Commissioner of Agriculture Ibrahim Hussaini stated the impacted local government areas where the farms were located are Chikun, Igabi, and Lere, while speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting with the Poultry Farmers Association.

The tests were conducted by the National Research Veterinary Institute, according to the Commissioner, who was represented by the ministry’s Director of Veterinary and Livestock Services, Pakachi Zakariya.

The three farms have been depopulated and decontaminated, while the result for the fourth farm is still being awaited. Farmers in the state have been asked not to panic over losses, as there is a compensation policy for farmers in the state.
