The national power supplier said it welcomed the report, which found that former President Jacob Zuma manipulated the affairs of the parastatal and made it easy for the Gupta family to capture the institution.

A team of internal and external lawyers will support the project team and ensure that the report is reviewed, and understood and appropriate action is taken with regard to the recommendations made.

Eskom said it has already taken steps to recover money irregularly paid to various suppliers. It worked with the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to recover R1.1 billion from McKinsey, R1.577 billion and more funds from several other significant cases.

The power supplier has also initiated civil proceedings to recover some of the money lost due to State Capture, includingR3.8 billion in damages suffered by the state-owned entity because of the actions of those implicated in State Capture.

“State Capture and its agents caused immense harm to Eskom over many years. We view the release of the Commission’s report as an important step to ensure that more of those who undermine Eskom are brought to book, and we look forward to working with the National Prosecuting Authority to ensure that the miscreants speedily face criminal charges,” said Professor Malegapuru Makgoba, the Chairman of the Eskom board.
